Italy to stay in Afghanistan, says Prodi after spat with allies |
2007-02-07 |
Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi said that his country would keep its troops in Afghanistan, at the end of a day in which his foreign minister had attacked some allied states for interfering in the decision. "A disengagement on our part from Kabul would be incomprehensible today," he said after a meeting with leaders of the parties forming his coalition, some of whom are reluctant to maintain the country's military presence in Afghanistan. "We stay for the moment in Afghanistan strengthening our civil commitment and in favour of peace," Prodi said. He said there was no comparisons between the action in Afghanistan, where NATO and the United Nations were involved, and Iraq, which Italian troops left last year. |
