Militants deny involvement in recent Tank violence |
2007-01-28 |
A spokesman for militant leader Baitullah Mehsud in South Waziristan denied the group’s involvement in recent attacks on law-enforcement agencies in Tank district. The denial from the militant group came a day after an attack on a police vehicle killed one policeman in Tank, a district adjoining South Waziristan. The spokesman, Zulfiqar Mehsud, called reporters over the telephone from an unknown location, and told them that the Baitullah Mehsud-led group had “no link with any sort of violence” in Tank. “We condemn the recent violence in Tank district,” he said. “Only anti-state elements can be suspected of doing such things.” The group previously vowed to avenge a January 16 airstrike on a suspected Al Qaeda hideout. |
