NJ state officials: don't eat the squirrels
2007-01-25
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey has warned squirrel hunters near a toxic waste dump about consuming the critters because they could be contaminated with lead.

#8  Piney trash might eat tree rat, but it's confined to the denizens of Pennsyltucky otherwise.

#6  I had squirrel once - kilt in Tennessee by a Ragin' Cajun and cooked up by a little old black lady. It was so smothered in BBQ sauce it tasted like ... BBQ.

#5  The Weight Watcher's "Complete Food Companion" gives squirrel the value of 1pt per oz. That's the same as boneless, skinless chicken breast.

#4  Not bad, stewed up with some corn, limas, taters & anything else you have left over. The original Brunswick stew, before folks switched to using chicken in it. I'm sure rat would work fine too. With both rodents, it probably is a good idea not to use the ones caught around a toxic waste dump though.

#2  #1 CS - I remember our poor relations from the country (and if they were poor compared to us, that's poor) bringing Nannie a mess of squirrels a couple of times. She skinned them and floured & fried them for supper. I don't remember the taste, except that they didn't taste odd - just floured/fried meat.

Yes, squirrels are rodents. But they're BIG rodents, and they were free.

#1  I wanted to post something witty but can't stop laughing at the idea of eating a squirrel. Isn't it basically a large version of a rat?
