Eastern Sudan: A forgotten crisis |

While the worldÂ’s attention is fixed on the Darfur killing fields, eastern Sudan struggles to cope with nearly 200,000 displaced people. By Ayesha Kajee for IWPR (13/12/06) If Darfur, SudanÂ’s neglected westernmost region, is the Cinderella of the country, then eastern Sudan must be its ugly stepsister. Subjected to similar levels of marginalization by the Khartoum government as Darfur, and a virtual absence of social service infrastructure, the humanitarian crisis in the east may be even worse than that in Darfur, according to some diplomats and aid workers. |
