2006-11-22 |
![]() The military said the air force had targeted a Sea Tiger training camp another 15 miles further southeast on a lagoon near the village of Puthukkudiyiruppu. "We are being bombed," rebel military spokesman Rasiah Ilanthiraiyan told Reuters. "The bombs are falling near Kilinochchi. The buildings in town are vibrating. They have dropped about 20 bombs so far. There was no provocation." There were no immediate details of casualties or damage. "According to air force information, there is a Sea Tiger training base at Puthukkudiyiruppu, so we've targeted that," said military spokesman Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe. "This was not due to provocation as such. This was a known target. Every day the navy is getting hammered (in sea clashes), so to preempt that the air force has taken the target." |

#5 If they'd used Buffs, there would be a new harbor at the strike zone, capable of handling a half-dozen NIMITZ-class carriers. AND there would have been a lot more than 20 bombs dropped, since even the "H" models can be configured to carry 72 or 74 each. |

#4 The Sri Lanka Air Force currently operates nine squadrons from five operational bases: Katunayake (Colombo Airport), Ratmalana, Anuradhapura, Minneriya and Vavuniya. Scattered across the country are several Forward Operating Locations/Bases. The fighter element consists of two squadrons at Katunayake flying Kfirs, Shenyang J-7s and MiG-23s. Still soldiering on is a sole FT-5 for training. Two squadrons at Ratmalana provide the country's transport capacity, using a fleet of different transport aircraft. The helicopter element consists of four squadrons operating from different bases for (VIP-)transport and attack. Flying training is carried out by the training wing at Anuradhapura (with the Chinese CJ-6) after which students carry on with 14sq at Katunayake (with K-8s). Six of these Karakorums were originally ordered and delivered. Three were destroyed within a couple of weeks after delievery during the July 2001 attack. Three replacement aircraft were delivered in 2005. |
