Muslim Mac attack
2006-11-19
McDONALD'S latest bid to attract more customers -- Muslim fast-food lovers -- has caused uproar among customers. The fast-food chain has introduced halal products at two Melbourne restaurants, significantly boosting sales.

However some non-Muslim customers are furious they were not told their hamburger meat was slaughtered and blessed in accordance with Islamic rules laid down in the Koran.

McDonald's consulted Muslim leaders before introducing halal products at its Brunswick East and St Albans stores. Halal meat is from animals that have been killed facing Mecca and blessed using the name of Allah.

Brunswick East store assistant manager Nicholas Yacoub said the move had attracted a surge of new customers. "It has pretty much doubled our sales," Mr Yacoub said. The store does not tell drive-through customers about the change and has only one small sign inside advertising the move.

Coburg resident Miriam McLennan was stunned to discover the hamburger she bought from the Brunswick East store was blessed. "Just as a Muslim would not want to eat anything that isn't halal . . . I should have my rights to eat normal, ordinary food that hasn't been blessed," she said.

A Catholic Church spokesman said non-Muslims deserved to know if the food was halal before buying. But he said there was no biblical reason for Christians to avoid halal food.

A McDonald's spokeswoman said customers who did not want halal food should buy from any of its other stores.

#12  A lot of places serve Kosher food and no one seems to get in a snit about it.

There aren't any blessings or facing in a certain direction when slaughtering to make food kosher, Deacon Blues. The rabbis inspect to make sure, eg for meat, that the slaughterhouse is clean and sanitary, that only healthy animals are used, that the animals are killed quickly and cleanly, that the slaughtered meat is not in any way contaminated. As I understand it, the standards are actually higher than those required by the USDA.

#11  Remember, sacred cows make the tastiest hamburgers.

A few years back, Australian animal rights protesters criminals deliberately fed ham to sheep awaiting transport to MME (Muslim Middle East) countries so that they'd be rejected by the purchasers and would not have to undergo the tortuous shipping conditions.

#9  Quit yer bitchin'. It's not like Ms. McLennan would even be allowed into one when shariah is implemented.

Nope CF, it's all Halal all the time. No McMuffin here.

#5  I think I'd rather have my Big Mac at a restaurant that gets it's meat from regulated, inspected slaughterhouses than from the ass of a cow that was waggled in the general direction of Mecca whilst having its' throat slit with a rusty but sacred sword by an eye-rolling, Allah Akbaring, Imam.

A McDonald's spokeswoman said customers who did not want halal food should buy from any of its other stores.

Really - no accomodation for infidels? No compromise? Muslim-only. McDonald's. I suddenly feel in need of a Whopper.

#4  I don't have the specs, because my mind is rotten from too much Pr0n, but in France, hallal meat and food in general is a BIG business, with much infighting between the various muslim factions to monopolize it as much as possible.

Fun part is that sanitary authorities routinely found that so-called "hallal meat" is often not hallal at all (it even include pork!!!) and is sometimes tainted.

So, Pious Moderate Muslims see no harm in selling bogus hallal food to their fellow muslims, as long as they can make an extra buck in the process. This is all pretend.

#3  If it is no big deal then everyone should be happy eating meat that has not been consecrated to a demon.

#2  Hamburger still tastes the same no matter which way the animal is facing. Big Deal. A lot of places serve Kosher food and no one seems to get in a snit about it.
