| Ms. Post has an amusing page on her blog about hybrid cars and the Hollywood stars the rest of us should emulate. They're up to 23. A sample of the comments: Nora Ephron: We don't really need a car. But a few weeks ago, I spent a day being driven around in a hybrid. It was so quiet. And the computer on the dashboard said it got 30 miles to the gallon. It just seemed to be saying, buy me, I am virtuous, and you will be too if you own me. And, as I said, it's very quiet and rarely needs re-fueling, so in some way it's the opposite of me. And there was a tax rebate and you get to drive in the carpool lane even if there's only one person in the car. So we bought a hybrid. or Bill Maher.. Driving a hybrid is about terrorism and the environment, our number one and two issues... This is about self-preservation. My 1998 Chevy S-10 gets 24 MPG in city driving and about 27 highway. Where's my tax rebate? |

| #9 Took my 1983 Ford 250 HD 6.9 L diesel out for a spin last night. 5000 lb. empty, it got 19 mpg. 157,000 miles ago it got 25 mpg empty. It quite adequately protected me when I hit a deer head-on at 70 mph a few years ago. Just think what a lighter modern vehicle with a small turbo-charged diesel engine would do. Virtually nothing like my proposal is available in the US, although they're widely available in Europe. |

| #8 My (new) 2005 Hyundai Tucson 4WD V6 gets around 20-22mpg highway, somewhat less in the city, but it's fully-loaded, a much safer vehicle than my old '98 Pontiac Sunfire (the Tucson has driver, passenger, and side curtain airbags, automatic electronic stability program, sensor-controlled windshield wipers, and a buttload of other safety features my old car doesn't have - it also has CD/tape/AM/FM1/FM2, sits 5 comfortably, and has enough cargo space "for a small safari"). Of course, it cost me $25k less $3k in down payment so I don't really own it yet - I only lease it from the bank. |

| #7 The batteries in the hybrids have a 10 year life and cost $8500 to $10,000 including labor to replace. Then there is the hazardous disposal problem of the used battery! A friend who manages a Toyota dealership called hybrid buyers "stupid" and "suckers''. |

| #6 Once you count the energy used in manifacturing, Prii are not great savers of the world. A Corolla uses about $2.49 per mile in energy costs, including amortized production energy costs. A Prius costs about $2.79. The funniest is that an H1 costs about $1.99 in total energy costs per mile. Yes, less than most econoboxes. |

| #5 My 1989 Chevy S-10 4.3L 4WD gets at least 20 mpg. I could give you a more accurate figure if the gas gauge worked. I spend about five dollars a week on gas for it. It's not what mileage a vehicle gets that's important, it's how much gas you use. My 1988 Acura used to get 29 mpg on the highway at 75 mph. Twenty years later, cars of that size still get about 30 mpg. Go nuclear plus hydrogen if you want carbon neutral, or drive less. Most of this hybrid stuff is just lifestyle bragging. |
