U.S POPULATION HITS 300 MILLION |
2006-10-17 |
THE US population hit the historic milestone of 300 million at 9.46pm (AEST) today, the Census Bureau announced. The date and time for the arrival of the 300th million resident was based on a calculation by the US Census Bureau that takes into account birth rates, death rates and rates of international migration. With that in mind, it was determined that the 300th million resident was either a newborn, an immigrant coming across the border or someone flying into the United States. Unlike the pomp and circumstance that greeted the 200 million mark in 1967, federal officials did not organise any major celebrations for today's landmark, which comes amid a raging debate in the United States on immigration and concerns over the potential environmental impact. |

#36 We had our first in 1967, and adopted our last one (of 3) in 1988. We have one 17-YO granddaughter, and my youngest got married in July. What little hair I have left is gray, but I'm going to enjoy being a Grandpa every chance I have... |

#35 Well, lol, you could throw away 30 or 40 IQ points and self-medicate. :-) |

#34 Mine are 15, 16, and 18 -- I need meds somedays. |

#33 Big congrats to the tsarevitch, SB!! And it's cool to see the pics of 'Burgers and kin at Blair's site. Enjoy him while he's little and cute - it'll keep ya' from strangling him when he's a teen. ;-p Yep. Mine's 30 and human again. It took a while, tho. |

#30 You need to read her blog, Zenster. She served an "Eviction Notice" awhile back, so I don't think we're talking grandson. |

#27 Just curious if anyone read the comedy book THE POPULATION BOMB. Didn't that book say we'd hit 300 million some time in the early 70s or something. |

#26 Hard to do when breastfeeding, .com. ;-) But information I would've killed for 15 years ago... the small amount of rice cereal could as easily be added to a bottle of pumped breastmilk. Heartiest congratulations on your handsome young Tsarevich, Swamp Blondie! Sleep when he does, eat carryout, and let the housework go to hell until he settles down a bit. Ten pounds? Wow! If it's any comfort, our pediatrician promised the trailing daughters would sleep through the night when they reached 11 lbs -- which for both was about the third month, but it looks like you've got a headstart there. |

#25 Wonderful, SB! Enjoy him while he's little and cute - it'll keep ya' from strangling him when he's a teen. ;-p |

#23 SB - Ya gotta cheat a little... Spike the formula with a small amount of Pablum / Rice cereal, like 1-2 tbsp per half bottle. He'll sleep longer - should get a solid 3.5-4 hrs of peace. Heh. |

#21 Yup, the Tsarevich Joseph Michael is here, running my life and generally being the most demanding boss I've ever had. 29 September....10 lbs, 2 oz. Great lung power, dark hair and blud-gray eyes. Would love to chat more, but he's starting to howl about something. :) Catch ya later!! And congrats to Darth, too! |

#20 Most of us in the U.S. are here by immigration of our ancestors if not of our immediate families. Immigration is not the problem; lack of assimilation is the problem. As long as Mexican Americans and Korean Americans and Polish Americans recognize that Mexican, Korean, and Polish are adjectives here, then there's no problem. The question is what is the adjective. For example, are your neighbors Muslim Americans or American Muslims? So "A", it's a question of primary allegiance. The UK has imported a lot of Muslims and devout Muslims will always be Muslims first. |
