Excerpt from larger essay on "America & its Discontents" (hat tip Instapundit) Such a sad fellow, this Jimmy Carter Jimmy Carter, the subject of the last blog, almost immediately was back in the news claiming that the United States was one of the world’s great abusers of civil rights (I wonder how our internecine body count in Plains, Georgia stacks up with that in Rwanda, Kosovo, or Dafur?). He adds that all Presidents—except the current one—have been supporters of human rights. In his dotage, Carter is proving once again that he is as malicious and mean-spirited a public figure as he is historically ignorant. And for all his sanctimonious Christian veneer, and fly-fishing, ‘aw shucks blue-jeans image, he can’t hide an essentially ungracious and unkind soul. That's gonna leave a mark. Preach it, brother! Does he have any idea of Lincoln and Andrew Johnson suspending habeas corpus and shutting down newspapers, Woodrow Wilson jailing political dissidents, FDR interning American citizens and executing German agents in secret military tribunals? Do we have currently a Nixon’s enemies list? And can Carter point to just one aspect of current American life where civil liberties are materially curtailed, in which an American can’t do what he wants? Getting on a plane without shampoo doesn’t count—or not having your family at the gate when you land either: all thanks to al Qaeda, not George Bush. |

#18 moosey, radom thoughts should not be indulged, nurtured and then expounded as theories. tip: discipline: test your theories with some the rigor, impartial evidence, logic or first hand experience before you drop them on friends. :-) So far your theories, to name but a few, about Italians, Southerners, and enlisted personal etc. reek of first rate foolery. |

#17 I spend a lot of time around Robins AFB where people have seen JC up close (Plains is only about 20 - 30 miles away) and have formed definite opinions. Good Christian ladies in their 50's and 60's think that Jimmy walks on water. Most of the men are just embarrassed and change the subject whenever his name is mentioned. Jimmy Carter is a Northern caricature of a bitter, self-righteous, mendacious, vicious old Southern cracker. |

#15 I see parallels between electing Jimmy Carter president and contacting genital herpes - a one time mistake leading to perpetual flare-ups of nastiness. |

#14 Got nuthin to do with faith, Moosey, it has to do with making unsubstantiated statements guaranteed to draw a reaction. As for your hypothesis, it lacks mucho merit. Many, and I mean many, peoples lived with corn as the primary (it was sole for none, AFAIK) grain. And few peoples are known for berserker behavior. Interesting idea? Sure, but it hasn't the ring of truth based upon history. If you wanna have a little fun, fine. If you wanna specumalate yer hiney off, fine. But this crap about posting your opinions, sometimes from waaay out in left field, as fact has been a staple running gag for 2+ years - and it sometimes sucks the big one. Woop, woop. |

#13 Oh ye of little faith. The disease is a deficiency of Niacin in the diet, aka Pellagra. One helluva lot of people in the South died from it, and just about everybody had it to some extent. It comes from eating corn in the absence of other grains. There was a major scandal called "The Pellagra Incident", that happened in 1935. After a huge number of mostly African-Americans had died of pellagra, the government admitted that it had known the cause was Niacin deficiency for 20 years. This is why I suggested that southerners were known for their violent meanness in Jimmy's youth. Since that time, much better nutrition has pretty much wiped out pellagra in the US. But from the time of the Civil War through the 1930s, southerners *did* have a reputation for crazy meanness, which *may* be attributed to vitamin deficiency. And quite likely, since Carter was born in 1924, for a good part of his youth he probably suffered to some extent from pellagra. I will note that one of its top four symptoms is dementia from brain damage. Hmmm. |

#8 Poor southerners were renowned for their violent meanness in Jimmy's youth. It has been suggested that a diet whose grains are exclusively corn causes this effect. Typically, when humiliated, they would get into a blind, berserker rage, that often ended up with them being hung by the neck until dead. Typical Bull Shit from a fat fucking yankee. |

#7 "Poor southerners were renowned for their violent meanness in Jimmy's youth." Naaah, that's just disinformation to keep the Yankees from moving here permanently. |

#5 I suspect that recently somebody told Jimmy precisely what a useless, ineffectual and pathetic excuse he is and was during his presidency. That is what set Jimmy off in the first place. Poor southerners were renowned for their violent meanness in Jimmy's youth. It has been suggested that a diet whose grains are exclusively corn causes this effect. Typically, when humiliated, they would get into a blind, berserker rage, that often ended up with them being hung by the neck until dead. |
