Israeli army detects failures in protecting missile ship from attack

A navy investigation showed that both intelligence and operational lapses caused an Israeli warship being attacked by Lebanese Hizbollah on July 14, which killed four sailors on board, Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz reported on Thursday.
Formerly, navy officers acknowledged that they had not received the information that Hizbollah was capable to threaten the missile ships. It was unclear whether the navy had failed to ask the Israeli intelligence agencies of the Hizbollah's capabilities or didn't get precise answers after consulting with them, Ha'aretz said. An IDF spokesman told Xinhua that the inquiry report was passed from Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Dan Halutz to the navy commander, and related investigation was still going on. The Israeli warship hit off the Lebanese coast is a multi- purpose, helicopter-carrying corvette of the U.S.-built Saar 5 class, one of the world's first warships to use stealth technology.

#7 Apparently, the defenses were inactive due to possible intereference with nearby IAF activity - i.e. don't want friendly fire. Which is why there are little things like ingress and egress routes, tactical control of aircraft, handoffs to other controllers, etc. |

#5 That's the problem with CWIS and the radar system, they're AUTOMATIC and when they actuate, boom. So,in close quarters we often turn ours off,I have this from a retired XO of the USS San Francisco. Israel did as well. I imagine they also are astonished at the talent of their enemy which added to the decisions, who thinks an Arab/Muslim can do anything comparable to the mighty USA or Israel? |

#4 IIRC other reports indicate this isn't quite the total SNAFU it appears. Apparently, the defenses were inactive due to possible intereference with nearby IAF activity - i.e. don't want friendly fire. Anyone know how CIWS and related defenses account for incoming and outgoing simultaneously, as in here comes your helo, and right behind it is the silkworm? Don't want to mess the helo while taking out the enemy. |

#2 one of the world's first warships to use stealth technology. That helicopter barn at the stern doesn't seem very "stealthy" to me. If that bill board antenna was an Israeli "add-on" then the "fat, dumb and happy" attitude goes way above the ship's captain. |

#1 I would say not having the defense system on in a war zone is a pretty big fucking failure. But that is just my opinion. |
