| Palestinian militants who abducted an Israeli soldier gave Israel less than 24 hours on Monday to meet their demands to release Palestinian prisoners, threatening unspecified consequences if it refused. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert rejected the ultimatum and his defence chief said Israel would "know how to reach everyone responsible" if Corporal Gilad Shalit was harmed. "If the enemy does not agree to our humanitarian demands ... we will regard this case as closed," said "Military Communique 3", issued by the armed wing of the governing Hamas movement and two other factions. "We give the Zionist enemy until 6 a.m. (4 a.m. British time) tomorrow, Tuesday, the fourth of July." In previous communiques, the groups called on Israel, as a first stage, to release 400 Palestinian women and youths in its prisons in return for information about Shalit, abducted in a June 25 raid launched from Gaza. The groups -- Hamas' Izz el-Deen al-Qassam Brigades, the Popular Resistance Committees and the previously unknown Islamic Army -- subsequently demanded Israel free 1,000 prisoners. Unless the demands were met, the factions said, "the enemy will bear full responsibility for future consequences". Izz el-Deen spokesman Abu Ubaida would not elaborate, except to say: "The enemy should read between the lines." "If the enemy truly values the life of the captured soldier, it just has to implement the demands of the factions," he told Reuters. The groups accused Israel, mounting an offensive in Gaza, of bad faith in an Egyptian mediation effort to end the crisis. But Olmert's office said in a statement: "The government of Israel will not yield to the extortion of the Palestinian Authority and the Hamas government, which are led by murderous terrorist organisations." |

| #9 Hell, 'Moose, in for a penny, in for a pound. Hang all 9K of them and be done with it. The world outcry wouldn't be any louder than it would be for 50. I'd like to see Israel expel all Gaza to either Egypt or the WB. EVICT THEM ALL AND RAZE THE STRIP. NO MORE GAZA. |

| #8 Simple solution: Restore the death penalty, but place a "good behavior" stay on carrying it out. Then, if they decide to kidnap and murder again, announce that unless the hostage is freed unharmed, the sentences on all pending death penalty cases will be carried out immediately. There are two ways to reinforce, positive and negative. Since positive reinforcement has proven to be utterly futile with Paleos, then it is time for negative reinforcement. You have to admit that even the Paleos would be moved by the mass hanging of say 50 of their kin at once. |

| #7 The Paleo-terrorists don't seem to understand that the one issuing an ultimatum has to be in a position of superiority, e.g. controlling all borders, water and energy supplies. Living in a dreamworld of Islamofascist supremacy does not count. I'm now waiting for Israel to make the right choices. Hoping, and waiting. |

| #5 He's dead and it is down to war. Whether Israel calls it or Iran calls it remains to be seen. Mahmoud may not be ready just yet, so Israel has the leg up for now. Take out Hamas-Syria now and let loose the dogs of war. |

| #3 I think Israel is going to make them a very interesting counter offer. I certainly hope so. Israel has a history of letting pretty appalling people out of jail by the busload just to get bodies of their people back. |

| #2 Are they really stupid enough to hold out for all women and minor prisoners plus a thousand paleo prisoners for one kid? Damn! You have to hand it to them, not many people would have the balls to make a demand like that. I think Israel is going to make them a very interesting counter offer. |
