Turkey ‘covers up bombings’ to protect tourist industry
2006-07-02
TURKISH officials have been accused of covering up a terrorist bombing campaign in an attempt to safeguard the countryÂ’s lucrative tourist industry.

An explosion that killed four people and injured 28 last Sunday in a popular restaurant at a waterfall at Manavgat, about 60 miles east of the Mediterranean resort of Antalya, was blamed by Fikret Dayioglu, the local governor, on a faulty gas cylinder. But he produced no evidence and could not explain why most of the casualties occurred away from the kitchen area.

Vatan, a leading Turkish daily, later reported that security cameras had captured footage of a three-strong terrorist cell placing a bomb in a bin 20 minutes before the blast. The report was denied by local officials but responsibility for the explosion was admitted by the Kurdistan Liberation Hawks (TAK), a group controlled by the separatist Kurdistan WorkersÂ’ party (PKK).

#7  Avoid Turkey if you can, go to Greece instead the people there are just as arrogant but not so aggressive. In turkey its considered polite to swear and curse your parentage whilst bartering in the market.

Oh! if anyone out there is turkish

Ananin amina cam dikerim, golgesinde seni sikerim trans.

And I hope you and your mothercountry remain the EU's whore for another 50 years.

#6  Just stay more than ____ from the kitchens so you don't get caught in the gas cannister explosions, Verlaine. ;-)

#5  go ahead and enjoy. Your chances of getting hit by a truck or crashing in a plane are probably greater than being at the right time and place for a terrorist attack. Besides, if others are staying away - that might mean good deals :-)

#4  Was considering Turkey for my next break, but had some misgivings due the security factor (OK, I know, what's someone in Baghdad worrying about in Turkey! But of course here I'm pretty safe, not out in Shi'a markets very often ....). The female friend who's traveling to meet me was also a bit wary - she pays attention, though I don't think she's YET reading R'burg regularly - so we said the hell with it and we're going to enjoy a luxury resort in hot-as-hell Dubai. So wrack up one small victory for the Hawks ....

#3  RWV-

Actually there's a fairly large tourist industry that caters to Christians - IIRC the Apostle Paul travled through Anatolia, I know more than a few people who have taken tours that retrace his steps.
