Armed group crosses Kyrgyz border |
2006-05-12 |
A group of armed men has broken into Kyrgyzstan from Tajikistan, killing at least three border guards, Kyrgyz officials have said. The seven-strong group first attacked a Tajik border post in the Batken region, and seized the weapons there. Then they clashed with Kyrgyz soldiers, killing at least three, a police spokesman told the Associated Press. Security forces are currently trying to track down the perpetrators, according to Russian media sources. The Batken region is located in the restive Fergana valley, which is shared by three Central Asian nations - Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. It has been an area of regional instability since the collapse of the Soviet Union, and is known as a hotbed of Islamic fundamentalism. |
