Egypt police detain up to 23 Muslim Brothers
2006-05-04 | |
A police source said 20 people were detained in the capital for membership of the Islamist group, which makes up the largest opposition bloc in parliament but is officially banned. There was no immediate explanation for the difference in numbers. Police detained more than 100 Brotherhood members last month and 53 of those remain in detention, an official at Brotherhood headquarters said. "The security forces have launched a large-scale campaign against the Muslim Brotherhood in the recent period because of its activities denouncing the emergency law," the group said on its Web site. Brotherhood members and activists from secular opposition groups have held several demonstrations in the last two weeks denouncing the two-year extension of emergency law, which they say the government uses to limit political activity. The secular groups say dozens of their supporters are also in detention. The government says it uses emergency law only to combat terrorism and drug trafficking, and will eventually replace it with an anti-terrorism law.
