Christian Schwarz-Schilling, who became Bosnia's international High Representative in February, said he hopes to close his office in early 2007 and set Bosnia firmly on course toward membership in the European Union and NATO. "The country must take on responsibility for its own political reforms and economic development," he said. The position was established to oversee implementation of the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement that ended Europe's most brutal fighting since World War II between Bosnia's Muslims, Serbs and Croats. The high representative has the right to intervene in disputes and fire government officials if necessary to ensure the accord is followed. When Schwarz-Schilling departs, a European Union special representative will establish an office in Bosnia - but without the high representative's powers, Schwarz-Schilling said. | |
