| Govt considers 'grand jirga' |

| The government is considering calling a "grand jirga" in the tribal areas to work towards peace in the area, Interior Minister Aftab Sherpao said on Tuesday. The jirga would consist of tribal elders, clerics, local councillors and government officials and its job would be to identify "anti-state elements" and persuade tribesmen not to shelter foreign militants, the minister told reporters. Sherpao said the government was taking several measures to bring peace to the tribal areas, one of which was to crackdown on foreign militants. "We are committed to establishing complete writ of the government in the tribal areas," he said. |
