| KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) - Maoist rebels and government forces clashed in a village in southern Nepal, killing 14 militants and six security forces, the royal army said Sunday. The gunbattle began Saturday night when the insurgents attacked a security patrol in Phapar Badi village, 100 miles south of the capital, Katmandu, a Royal Nepalese Army official told The Associated Press. Fourteen militants, five soldiers and one police officer were killed, he said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media. Security forces have taken control of the area where the gunfight took place and were searching for rebel cadres in helicopters, the military official said. |
