Australia considers cutting citizenships for convicted terrorists |
2005-11-10 |
![]() The federal Attorney-General says the question of whether to strip convicted terrorists of Australian citizenship is not a simple one. Philip Ruddock says the Prime Minister has asked him and the Citizenship Minister, John Cobb, to look into the matter. Some Liberal backbenchers have already supported the idea of deporting dual citizens found guilty of terrorism crimes. Mr Ruddock says he and Mr Cobb will examine the issues. "It's important to recognise that if people undertake behaviour which is antipathetic and is in conflict with their commitment to Australia, you are entitled to question whether the protection that comes from citizenship is something that they are able to retain and some people are," he said. |

#12 It's not like the Magic Kingdom has ever had any problem with the idea of revoking citizenship. Just ask Osama Bin Ladin |

#8 Having citizenship or not doesn't make a difference here in the states. In fact we have millions of folks that aren't citizens, and not only are they not citizens, they can do horrible crimes and then scoot back across the border and not be held accountable because we believe in the death penalty. So they have their country as a safe haven. Drives me nuts. |

#7 RJ, Agreed. Deporting them only means that they set up shop somewhere else in the world. Dead, please. |

#6 A citizen convicted of treason should be shot. A non-citizen accused of the same crime is a spy, and should be shot. I'm not sure I see any reason to worry about citizenship status. |

#5 Dual citizenship is fine. But if they're convicted of a terrorist act, or even of stealing, rape or straight out murder then deport, deport, deport them to the motherland! |

#4 Dual citizenship is a joke. Not necessarily; it depends on who #2 is. The proprietor of Right-Thinking-from-the-Left-Coast, if I recall correctly, has dual Australian/U.S. citizenship. |

#1 Sounds like a solid plan of action. Willing others can be trained to manage convenience stores and airport security posts. |
