Iraq
US launches operation Iron Fist
2005-10-01
On Saturday in the western town of Sadah, about 1,000 U.S. Marines, soldiers and sailors from Regimental Combat Team-2 began the U.S. military offensive, which was named "Operation Kabda Bil Hadid," or "Operation Iron Fist" in English. The offensive in western Iraq near the Syrian border on Saturday aimed at terrorists insurgents from Al Qaeda in Iraq, this country's most feared terrorist militant group, the military said.

The operation is against "a known terrorist sanctuary" began in the town of Sadah in the western province of Anbar, about eight miles from the Iraq- Syria border, the U.S. military said in a statement. The offensive also was aimed at stopping foreign terrorists insurgents from entering the country from Syria and at improving security in the area before Iraq's Oct. 15 national referendum on the country's draft constitution, the military said.

In recent months, the terrorists insurgents have established a base in Sadah and used it to launch attacks against Iraqi civilians and U.S. and Iraqi in the area, the statement said. No civilian or military casualties were immediately reported, and the U.S. military declined to say whether Iraqi forces were taking part in the operation.

Give them a good Fisting.

#9  I know that it would be impolitic and non-PC, but for a real full-court-press operation, I would like to see Operation Kick Ass.

#5  Hmmm, a big counter-insurgency op in a town about 8 miles from the Syrian border. Gosh, I hope the border is well marked because it would be, like, a real shame and stuff, if someone were to, like, accidentally wander over chasing after bad guys.

Actually, I see this as a likely scenario: Coalition forces acting on intel, either tips or JSTARS, head across the border and engage bad guys. Syrian forces become involved to 'protect the homeland against invading Crusader armies'. Junior Assad wets himself. The Americans do that "kill people and blow up their stuff" thing they do so well and the Iraqi forces get some needed practice.

If there were a Rantburg futures market, I'd be placing bets.
