Tanker escapes pirates off Somalia
2005-07-27
Armed pirates off the coast of Somalia have tried to board an Italian tanker for the second time in less than a week, Italian port authorities said. The failed attack occurred on Tuesday morning about 137km from Somalia's coast and lasted only a few minutes, said First Sergeant Massimo Maccheroni, a spokesman for Italy's central port authority in Rome. None of the crew was harmed.

Maccheroni said pirates on two small vessels fired at the ship and tried to board the 24,000-tonne Cielo di Milano, but the crew reacted swiftly, increasing speed and activating the ship's anti-fire system, which sends strong jets of water gushing out from the sides of the tanker. The Italian tanker was coming from the Red Sea and continued on its way to Mombasa, Kenya, Maccheroni said.

#5  Shotguns? We could kill two birds with one stone, so to speak...

Load the shotguns with rock salt and bacon rind... Being permanently implanted with pork will nmake some of those boys thing hell awaits... Can't enter heaven with pig fat in your backside...

#4  Why don't the shipping companies start to install ships armories with 25 or so shotguns. A combination of 00 buckshot and 12ga. emergency flares would ward off pretty much any of the scurrilous bastards floating around out there.

#1  Maybe they should replace the water jets with something a bit more 'potent' - perhaps some 30 mm cannon? Ought to suffice against small speedboats, and 'discourage' them from coming around again.
