Islamic Jihad fires rockets at Israel town
2005-07-26
GAZA, July 26 (UPI) -- Islamic Jihad militants said they fired two rockets at the Israeli town of Sederot Tuesday in retaliation for the arrest of several members of the group. A statement by the al-Quds Brigades, Jihad's military wing, said two locally-made Quds-2 rockets slammed into Sederot early in the morning, causing material damage and panic among the population. "The operation is in response to the arrest by Israeli forces of nine members of Islamic Jihad in Jenin and Bethlehem in the West Bank," the statement added.

#7  That's what I was saying. It's like the kid trying to excuse himself by saying "He hit me back first!"

#5  I hope Israel doesn't shoot back. That would endanger the fragile Cease-Fire™.

#4  Robin, I don't have any need to swat my dog. Unlike the Palestinians, he's quite well behaved. Besides, I let my newspaper subscription run out and now completely out of doggie ammo.

But my quip about firing back stands. Artillery is an immediate feedback mechanism, while closing a border crossing is not.

#3  Actually, Ed, the only thing that teaches a dog is to fear you, unless you do it exactly as the dog is ABOUT to piss. And even then it's not the best approach to housetraining.

See, for instance, excellent books such as Karen Pryor's Don't Shoot the Dog or Jean Donaldson's Culture Clash for a good, scientific explanation of operant conditioning and how dogs really learn.

Now this is pretty pendantic on my part -- except for the fact that humans (who have reasoning powers dogs lack) do also learn from operant conditioning. If you want to give effective behavioral feedback it must come immediately AS the action is being performed -- and the subject must perceive the connection between their actions and the response.

Finally, the response must NOT come when they are NOT doing the action in question.

#2  Each time this happens, the israelis should respond with artillery and level a grid square. Consider it the mideast equivalent of whacking the dog on the nose for pissing on the carpet. It's the right thing to do.
