| Basayev behind Znamenskoye blast |

| 14 people, eleven policemen and three civilians, among them two children aged 13 and 14, were killed on Tuesday after a police car was blown up in the Chechen village of Znamenskoye. About 20 people were injured. The village is approximately 60 km (37 mi) northwest of the Chechen capital of Grozny. Most of the dead were local residents; only two were policemen. Chechen president Alu Alkhanov was quoted by ITAR-TASS news agency as saying that the terrorist attack was committed by gunmen following orders from warlord Shamil Basayev. Basayev has claimed responsibility for several bloody attacks in Chechnya and other Russian regions, including the school siege in Beslan. âThis crime has no statute of limitation,â Alkhanov said, adding that those who are guilty âwill not evade punishment.â |
