| U.N. supplying Iran with high tech |

| Iran is working to acquire body armor, high-tech communications and satellite surveillance through U.N-sponsored programs for what it says is its fight against drug smugglers. But Washington fears the procurements - along with legal and illegal arms purchases by Tehran - could be used against its troops in the region. A glance at the U.N programs and equipment: - Since 1996, Britain and France, in cooperation with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, have provided Iran with an unspecified number of body armor vests, armor plates and night vision goggles. The program also has sent advanced radio and other communications equipment to Tehran - A proposal by Tehran to set up a U.N-funded regional satellite network for surveillance of drug traffickers is on hold because of U.S. and allied fears it could be used for surveillance of American troops in Iraq, Afghanistan - and ultimately Iran itself, should it ever become a target. Diplomats say the draft has been shifted from the U.N. office on outer space to the U.N. drugs and crime office, both based in Vienna, Austria. |
