Reminder: RSVP for Rant-a-Palooza Jan. 22, Washington DC
2005-01-05
The Rantburg editorial staff is pleased to invite the Rantburg community to the Inaugural Rant-a-Palooza!

Date: Saturday, January 22
Time: 1 p.m. 'til last call
Where: Chinatown, downtown Washington DC. Exact name of watering hole to be provided later.
Metro: Chinatown-Gallery Place on Red/Yellow/Green lines

We'll raise a glass to "four more years of tax cuts and dead terrorists." Then we'll raise a glass to the best damn website in the Blogosphere. After that, it's up to you!

Fred, myself, and Dan Darling will be attending. The Army of Steve sends its regrets; they are too busy airlifting relief supplies and Rantburg posts into Aceh province.

Please email me at seafarious@yahoo.com to let me know if you're coming, or leave a note in comments. If you want to come in from out of town, let me know.

Thanks and we are looking forward to meeting you!

#44  I'll drink to the president. Is it O.K. to do so before 2:00 p.m. EST? Got to be in Atlanta-sorry. Would like to meet all of you.

#43  Well then. Now I'll have to look into wi-fi and stuff. I have something else cool in mind, but I ain't sayin'.

To everyone who can't attend, I'm truly sorry. We'll miss you for sure!

To make us feel less bad, send money to Fred for beer...

#41  Hey anyone wanting to meet up in Reno drop me an email. We will need a karoke bar and a full bar! I have camera and extra memory too.

#40  How about some live posts from the Rant-a-Palooza? Glenn even posts from the tire shop;)
Also, how about a Midwest Rant party in the Chicago area (barring a snow-out like tonight!)? I know Dr. Steve of the Army is in the area as am I and others. Just a thought.

#37  Can't get outside Wisconsin anytime soon; transporter beam's on the fritz. My son "Korora" and I will salute the occasion appropriately at home. Root Beer per tutti.

#36  I would give anything to be there but there's just no way I can work out the timing. Hoist one for me and let's see about having the next one in Norfolk aboard the battleship Wisconsin.*S*

And for all Rantburgers worldwide, we'll be toasting the President precisely at 2 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
Thanks for the headsup, Sea - I'll set a timer and hoist a glass of Diet Coke in his honor with you. :-D

#34  Would love to attend and I am seriously tempted but unfortunately I can't make it. Raise a glass for me, please. Simply too much to prepare right now for the "big visit".

And on January 27th I will attend a much less joyful but very important ceremony in Poland.

#33  Cyber is definitely on to something. That, and my wife hasn't had a chance to get on stage at Rum Bouillions for some time now. Man, my head hurts already!
Posted by: Rex Mundi   2005-01-05 7:07:20 PM

#32  Can't make it this time Seafarious, but I'll raise a pint or two at this end!

Things are *bloody* expensive over here, a common phrase is 'rip-off Britain'. E.g. 40 gig iPod = $399 and £254 ex VAT (the EU tax) = £299 inc. At current exchange rates ($1.88 to the pound), that iPod should be £212 ex VAT. Grumble...

Anyhoo, have a great one, post some photos and raise a pint or two for those RBers that can't be there just now.

#31  BD: My experience has been that US prices are usually equivalent in dollars to what we'd normally pay in pounds - that is UK goods are about fifty to sixty percent dearer.

Correcto. Now that the pound is worth 2 bucks...

#30  Everything in the UK costs twice what it does in NYC

My experience has been that US prices are usually equivalent in dollars to what we'd normally pay in pounds - that is UK goods are about fifty to sixty percent dearer. My last trip to the US was almost five years ago, though, so right now I'd expect things to be substantially cheaper stateside than they were before. Still, tempting though it is, I have to pass. I'm needed elsewhere on Sunday, and jet-lagged hangovers aren't a good idea when you're up a ladder... ;)

#29  I am all for a partner Rant-a-paloza in say Reno? Reachable by most on the left coast and lots of fun. Save some airfare for booze.
Posted by: Cyber Sarge   2005-01-05 4:12:36 PM

#28  Note that I'm including essentials, such as toothpaste and soap, which I understand are optional across the English Channel.
Posted by: Zhang Fei   2005-01-05 3:50:53 PM

#27  Seafarious: C'mon. Bulldog, Tony, Howard, Shep...the pound is worth approximately $14.00 US right now! And TGA and JFM, the euro is climbing every day. You can all make a fortune in the duty free...

Forget the duty free. Everything in the UK costs twice what it does in NYC (which is known for being expensive), except for meals. That costs three times as much. NYC prices.

#25  Hmmm...sometimes anarchists end drinking in the same bar, yes?

It's kinda like that.
Posted by: Seafarious   2005-01-05 3:28:21 PM

#24  I didn't realize Rantburg was er ah so structured. I thought it was made up of a rather loose collection of fiercely independent anarchists spread across the country. My mind is blown (maybe it was before). Ya'al sound like a fraternity-no offense. Are you sure this is not a scrappleface?

#22  BD: Got an ache in my rowing arm so regrettably I'll be staying this side of the pond, this time. I'll be raising a toast to The 'Burg and the 'Burgers in another time and space.

You do realize that you can pay for the cost of a trip by simply loading up on essentials (toiletries, OTC medicines, basic clothing, etc) before you head back to the UK, don't you? People I know have done the round trip and found themselves ahead.

#21  We'll miss ya, PR! Sorry the economy sux...

As for webcam, I'd have to defer to spmeone who has more equipment/technical expertise than me. Also need a reeeeeelly long broadband cable.

But I will ask for everyone who is coming to bring their cameras, lots of free memory and batteries!

#19  Mrs. D.

I forgot all about Gentle, it's been a long time since I read anything from him/her/it.

Sea,

I apologize, but too short of a notice. I have bunch of projects on my plate. BTW, the Demoncrats told me that the Bush economy was going down the toilet. Then, how is it that I have so many projects? I don't know, maybe "born stone cold liars" may something to do with it.

#18  Thanks, Sea. Someday I hope to meet you folks.

Barb, Mike, Jules, it won't be the same without you.

Anyone on the Left Coast or in flyover country wants to get together, let's talk.

And for all Rantburgers worldwide, we'll be toasting the President precisely at 2 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.

#9  I am looking forward to the festivities.

CS, Chinatown is in NW DC on the Yellow/Green/Red metro line. Map can be found here: http://www.wmata.com/metrorail/systemmap.cfm

The stop name is Gallery Pl/Chinatown.

A good landmark is the MCI arena. It is located smack dab in Chinatown.

#7  Cheese, you guys still don't "get" the whole innernut thingie, do ya? I mean - ONE imbiblification site for the whole country? No "virtualization" at all?

What about us poor west coasters? Don't we get none?
(makes "Tiny Tim" eyes and sniffles)

#6  Sea, Thanks for the invite. I'm expecting number #4 so I won't be in DC for a bit. PS thanks for the tip I found my caps lock.
