UN Mideast peace envoy Terje Roed-Larsen reiterated yesterday that Syria was willing to resume peace talks without conditions with Israel, and a Syrian government newspaper said Damascus was ready and willing to make peace based on UN resolutions. But neither Roed-Larsen nor the newspaper clarified whether this meant Syria was giving up its long-held position that negotiations should resume where they broke off in 2000. "I accurately reported on what I was told by Syrian President Bashar Assad, and it would be inappropriate for me to comment on Israeli and Syrian public reactions," Larsen said at a Press conference at UN House in downtown Beirut. "Now the parties have to read what I have said," Larsen added.ÂÂ
"And hurry it up, dammit, 'cause I want to be a diplohero!" |
