Norwegian authorities reportedly have refused to take in 20 Chinese nationals who have been held by the US at its controversial prisoner-of-war camp at Guantanamo in Cuba. The US claims they don't constitute a terror threat. China has been demanding that the US send the 20 men, taken prisoner as alleged Islamic terrorists, back to China. They are originally from Xinjiang Province. The men, however, face long prison terms or death sentences in China. The US therefore has been asking other countries, including Norway, to take them in. Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) reported Friday that both Norway's foreign ministry and its immigration agency have declined the US request. The refusal was based on claims that the US itself should take responsibility for the prisoners it's been holding for three years, according to NRK. The Norwegians also worried that taking in the Chinese nationals could damage its own relations with China, an important trading partner.Good question. What does one do with inmates who can't be repatriated? |
