Darkazanli awaits trial in Germany
2004-11-02
A 46-year-old businessman, who is alleged to have financed the al-Qaeda terrorist network, is to give evidence this week in the retrial in Germany of suspected 9/11 helper Mounir al- Motassadeq. A court spokeswoman confirmed a local press report that Mamoun Darkazanli will appear when the Motassadeq trial resumes in Hamburg on Wednesday. Darkazanli, a dual German-Syrian national, is in custody after being arrested by police in the northern German city more than two weeks ago. He has been called to give evidence by lawyers acting for Dominic J. Puopolo, a US co-plaintiff in the trial.

Darkazanli is awaiting deportation to Spain where he is wanted in an investigation into his involvement in the 11 September 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States. The Spanish arrest warrant described Darkazanli as one "of the key figures of the al-Qaeda terror network" and the permanent contact person and assistant of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in Germany. He is thought to have been a confidante in Hamburg of the 9/11 suicide pilots.
