Moroccan gunman kills Dutch film director
2004-11-02
Dutch film maker Theo van Gogh, who made a controversial film about Islamic culture recently, has been shot dead in Amsterdam, Dutch police say. Police arrested a man in a nearby park after an exchange of gunfire. Van Gogh, 47, had received death threats after his film Submission, on violence against women in Islamic societies, was shown on Dutch TV. The film was made with liberal Dutch politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Somali refugee who fled an arranged marriage. Ayaan Hirsi Ali has been under police protection since the film was aired. She has also received death threats and has renounced the Islamic faith. Van Gogh's production company told the Dutch news agency ANP that he had been shot dead. Both the suspect and a policeman suffered bullet wounds and are now in hospital. The AFP news agency says his film Submission triggered an outcry from Dutch Muslims because it featured four abused women in see-through robes showing their breasts with Koranic text painted on their bodies.

MORE:
A suspect, a 26-year-old man with dual Dutch-Moroccan nationality, was arrested after a shootout with officers that left him wounded, police said. Filmmaker Theo van Gogh had been threatened after the August airing of the movie "Submission," which he made with a right-wing Dutch politician who had renounced the Islamic faith of her birth. Police had kept watch on Van Gogh's house as protection immediately after the film's release, but it was dropped because there was no concrete evidence of a threat, public prosecutor Leo de Wit said. In a recent radio interview, Van Gogh — who is the great-grandson of the brother of Vincent van Gogh, who was also named Theo — dismissed the threats and called the movie "the best protection I could have. It's not something I worry about."

Still more:
The national news service NOS said the suspect was friends with an [unnamed]18-year-old Muslim who is awaiting trial on charges of planning a terrorist attack. The Dutch Justice Ministry said it could not confirm the report.

#24  CM-I don't know. As long as so many Euros believe as the Eloi in the Time Machine believed-that they should unquestioningly walk towards their self-sacrifice because they deserve it, "handling" the situation seems unlikely.

#23  What's with the AP hack's repeated use of "right-wing" to describe the victim and his conservative political allies? Does the AP habitually refer to socialist politicians as "left-wing"?

Or is the start of yet another PC blame-the-victim media orgy of the kind that followed Fortuyn's killing?

#22  How to handle these guys? Just read the next article on how France is cracking down even worse than the worst Patriot Act nightmare of a Marin County wine sipper.

#17  Go here to see what the jihadis had to say...

From comments at Jihadwatch, "The text on top of the page (Insha Allah ruimt Allah deze letterlijke en figuurlijke zwijn snel op! Salaam o aliekoem) is translated into: Allah willing will Allah kill this pig. Salaam O Aliekoem."

#16  Did anybody notice that nowhere in the article the author refers to the killer as muslim?
Now, the guy "insulted" Jews and Christians alike but he was killed by a MUSLIM! This major detail escapes the author...how disgusting the Media has become!

#15  "It would be unacceptable if a difference of opinion led to this brutal murder," he said."

What a stupid thing to say. What else could have led to his murder? How can we, westerners, be so stupid? Don't we already know that when we upset members of the religious of peace the most common result is death? The only reason that muslims have "behaved" in this country is they know there are still enough Americans with balls that if they try something like that here, lots of them are going to receive the same treatment.

#14  And for the record, Theo van Gogh was the first to know of his brother Vincent's genius and talent. He supported him financially for many years so that V. could paint. V. only sold three paintings during his lifetime - Theo made it possible for V's legacy. The world is a lesser place without Theo's great-grand nephew; let's hope his sacrifice is not in vain.

#13  Ritualistic Islamoid infidel psycho slaughter - in the heart of the EU. The victim a prominent individual and opponent of the cult of Islam. Can't run any more, people. The wolf isn't even at the door. It's in the living room. It's time to take sides and be counted (and that includes moderate, secular and lapsed Muslims).

#12  More from AP: Police said Van Gogh's killer shot and stabbed his victim and left a note on his body. They declined to comment on reports that his neck was slashed and would not reveal the contents of the note.

#10  If 1% of the Moslems in the Netherlands are willing to murder an outspoken figure (such as Pim Fortuyn and Theo Van Gogh), and the murderers manage to kill or maim at least one policeman before capture, where will the country be?

That would translate to 10,000 dead leaders (intellectuals and/or politicians) and more than 10,000 policemen either dead or seriously wounded.

I doubt there are that many prominent intellectuals ready to denounce Islamofascism at the risk of their life, in the Netherlands, today. I also doubt the Dutch police have the requisite degree of training to deal with Moslem assassins. One percent of Moslems being dedicated Islamofascists is probably a low estimate -- as all evidence and surveys show that a minority of Moslems actually opposing Islamofascism. I wonder if the Dutch people will value liberty over dhimmitude.

#9  From the AP:

A suspect, a 26-year-old man with dual Dutch-Moroccan nationality, was arrested after a shootout with officers that left him wounded, police said.

Filmmaker Theo van Gogh had been threatened after the August airing of the movie "Submission," which he made with a right-wing Dutch politician who had renounced the Islamic faith of her birth. Van Gogh had received police protection after its release.

Dutch national broadcaster NOS and other media reported that Van Gogh's killer shot and stabbed his victim and left a note on his body. NOS said witnesses described the attacker as having an "Arab appearance."

A witness who lives in the neighborhood heard six shots, and saw the man concealing a gun. She said he walked away slowly, spoke to someone at the edge of the park, and then ran.

"He was walking slowly, like he was trying to be cool," she said, describing him as wearing a long beard and Islamic garb. "He was either an Arabic man or someone disguised as a Muslim," she said.

Another witness told Dutch Radio 1 the killer arrived by bicycle and shot Van Gogh as he got out of a car. "He fell backward on the bicycle path and just laid there. The shooter stayed next to him and waited. Waited to make sure he was dead."

#7  5% is nothing. I hope they can swim.
I have a friend who works in corrections there. Many inmates are muslims. They don't obey the law and they don't respect the native dutch. They are not popular.

#6  Reports are that the murderer is Moroccan and was wearing a traditional djellaba dress.

There are one million Moslem immigrants in the Netherlands. A bit over 5% of the population.

How are the Dutch going to reclaim their country? is it too late?

#5  They know the religion of the attacker and are not saying? If they do and are the limit may have already been reached perhaps?

Pity the religious nut job that get between me and my vices. This doesn't just apply to muslims either.

Oh and I do have a threat level 3 vest so you better make it a head shot if you come after me.

#3  This should also serve as a wake up call to all the enlightened Hollywood and recording industry types. They are in for a rude shock if the think that the religion of peace™ will tolerate their existance for one second after the first scene or lyric that even slightly steps out of line with sharia. Freedom of expression is not the province of the Dhimmi.

#2  EU official is the operative portion of the statement. The Dutch will not go Dhimmi. Their pain threshold may be high but the Muslims will be very sorry when they decide to do something about it.

#1  Another wake-up call for the Dutch: how do you like your future masters? I spoke with a Dutch EU official recently who said he didn't mind if Islam became the culture of Holland.
