Martin acts the statesman |
2004-10-23 |
Wants ministers to hold tongues (translates into American as "Just shut up!") Prime Minister Paul Martin is telling his cabinet to mind their own business when it comes to the U.S. presidential election. While some ministers have been speaking up about a preference for Democratic contender John Kerry in the Nov. 2 vote, Martin yesterday put a muzzle on the speculation. "The Americans will choose their president as Canadians will choose their prime minister, and I think that's the way we should let the comment go," Martin told reporters. The government will have to work with whoever wins on Nov. 2 and it has been standard practice in the past for ministers to keep their opinions to themselves on their preferred candidates. |
