| #2 The interests of TotalFinaElf and of Jacques Chirac are more or less identical. The interests of Yukos/LUKoil/oligarchs and Putin are opposed. Perhaps we're turning a corner in our relationship with the Russians. |

| #1 Note Russia's stand: Russia's Foreign Ministry expressed its support for the investigation into the alleged bribes. "The investigation that is being conducted should result in an objective picture of possible irregularities that could have been committed under the oil-for-food program," Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko said. "Russia, like all countries, is interested in the results of this investigation being objective," he said, according to the Russian news agency Interfax. |
