#6 A lot of the blame has to go to the French. Haiti had to pay 90 million gold francs in 1825 to King Charles X of France, as compensation for French settlers who had been expropriated by the newly-independent republic. This sum has been calculated to amount to 21bn dollars today. This completely ruined the country's economy, never to recover from. |

#4 I've heard tell that there's little or no ground cover in the center of the island. Burned it all up to make charcoal, or some such thing. Now, when the rains come... down comes the mud. Terrible thing to see. |
