| #5 Back in the 80s, some researchers were testing new computer-based models for metabolic processes and, in the process, discovered that PCBs are carried across cell-membranes by estrogen. Since all the safety studies on PCBs had been done with college-age males, the scientific consensus on safe levels of exposure were way too low, as they failed to account for the fact that women of all ages, and older men, have significantly higher estrogen levels than those undergrad guys. That set off a big search for other such effects. The 70s style feminism that said there are no differences always struck this woman as stupid ... as did the suggestion that women are inherently social and consensus oriented and men are power hungry jerks. |
