| Japan Appeals for Permanent Security Council Seat; China Opposed |

| EFL Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi has made his pitch for Japan to become a permanent member of the Security Council, teaming up with other aspirants Germany, India and Brazil to press for an expansion of the U.N.'s top body. "We believe that the role that Japan has played provides a solid basis for its assumption of permanent membership on the Security Council," Koizumi said in an address to the annual General Assembly session in New York City Tuesday. Japan has been pressing for a permanent seat since 1993, but Koizumi has made it a key policy goal. Next year marks the U.N.'s 60th anniversary, and officials in Tokyo are hoping the momentum for reform may benefit Japan's bid for membership. Second only to the U.S., Japan provides 19.5 percent of the U.N.'s budget, contributing almost 20 times more than permanent members China and Russia. It also argues that as the only country to have sustained a nuclear attack, it would bring a unique perspective to a body all of whose current permanent members are nuclear powers. Of those permanent members, the U.S., Britain and France reportedly have voiced support for Japan's bid, while China opposes it. Russia's stance remains unclear. |

| #5 Japan pays for 20% of the UN's budget. Without more say in the UN, let Japan pay proportionate to it's population, about 2%. The US and Japan alone pay for 45% of the UN. Take our people and money and let us form the core of a free, democratic, and uncorrupt association. Let the UN formally announce what it already is, a dictator's sinecure club. Away with you, and trouble us no more. |

| #4 Just ignore the UNSC and replace it with a new collective security group that would meet regularly in New York to address real security issues with an eye toward actually resolving them. Should include US-Japan-China-India-Russia-South Korea-Indonesia-Australia, also Uk-Fr-Ger, maybe Turkey and Brazil as well. |

| #3 yes they should get frances seat..the EU should only have one seat..anyways the only reason the frogs have a seat is because of truman not because they were a victor in the wwii as the other 4... and japan is beginning to stand up and take responsibilities that equals their economic clout... |

| #2 AMEN DON! Why for gods sake is France on the Security council? They can't and don't provide security of any kind. Nor do they have the power or economic power to back up any 'security measure' they propose. France OUT, Japan IN! |
