Algerian army chief resigns; wants to spend more time with his family |

"I'm outta here!" The powerful head of the Algerian army, General Mohamed Lamari, resigned for health reasons, an official statement said, following recent speculation that he was about to step down. Lamari presented his resignation to Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who also holds the defence ministry portfolio. Bouteflika named General Salah Ahmed Gaid, commander of ground forces, to replace Lamari as military chief of staff, a statement from the president's office said. |
