#5  It's hard to look at this guy's pic without thinking about how many attempts will be made on his life. Maybe not, but I'm just thinking about that guy they offed a few weeks a go and the near miss on Karzai.

#4  Brahimi says he "respects" the choice. CPA seems to accept it as well. Apparently Allawi was on everyones short list anyway, and then the IGC went and preempted the UN process by choosing him unanimously. Good for them I say, even if he is a Langley agent.

#3  It's only a nomination, of course.

#2  Except hes secular, doesnt seem to have been as close Sistani as Chalabi was, let alone the Shiite Islamist parties, and his INA has Sunnis in it. More like a generic Iraqi strongman. We'll see. Naturally Reuters has already done man on the street interviews with people saying "who the heck is Allawi?" What gives me the thought that theyd find the same for anyone appointed with the approval of the US?

#1  Nominating State's guy looks like another step down the road to burying Chalabi. Also as leader of the Iraqi National Account, a group comprised of military officers who defected from Saddam's military and with "relative" Ali Allawi as Minister of Defense, he looks suspiciously like a prototype Shiite strongman. Particularly as the leader of a failed coup in 96.

If nothing else, next month will be interesting.
