| Kidnapped Australian activist `foolhardy' |

| PRIME Minister John Howard yesterday branded the behaviour of an Australian aid worker kidnapped in Iraq as "careless and foolhardy". A self-styled human shield, Donna Mulhearn, 34, of New South Wales, was captured by Mujahadeen fighters on Wednesday as she attempted to leave Fallujah, the scene of heavy fighting between US troops and the Iraqi militia. She was released 20 hours later, after convincing her kidnappers she was helping the Iraqi people. Ms Mulhearn, a member of the ALP, claimed she had been shot at by US Marines. Mr Howard said Ms Mulhearn had needlessly placed her life in danger. "I think people have to understand that when they take unnecessary risks, they're not only putting their own lives at stake, but they're also putting at stake the lives of many other people and it is just not acceptable," he said. "I would be failing in my duty to the rest of the Australians who are in Iraq if I didn't say in the bluntest possible sense it is not fair on others to behave in a careless and foolhardy fashion." |
