Too much spam from Boris. I'm shutting Guest Posting down for awhile. When it comes back it'll be moderated. Sorry.

It's turned back on now, but articles will dump to the holding tank. Sorry you won't see it displayed right away, but I'm not putting up with anymore of Boris' crap. Some people get their jollies by shitting in the punchbowl.

I was kind of scared to look when I got up this morning, but it things seem to be working. Since I edit most posts for formatting and that sort of stuff anyway, I guess it won't be that much different for me, and actually faster.

NEW! IMPROVED! Most posts should show up immediately if you've posted before and if you've commented. I don't know if the method's foolproof, but it seems pretty slick to me. We'll see how it works.

#57  Hi Fred...Traveller here. I am so sorry to see the trouble that Boris is putting you through.

I am certain that you will devise a good solution to the problem, but I do hope that you will make every effort to keep the posting privileges as open as possible.

Though I am a card-carrying liberal, I have always attempted to post responsibly. I also remember our friend from Turkey, (Marius?), and some of the fun debates from about a year ago with him...his insight on the differences between " a Tribal Way of Life," and ours in the West remains with me to this day.

So, in the end, I suppose that this is a plea to keep as many and as diverse a population of posters as possible.

Best Wishes & Good Luck,

Traveller

#56  Legal Analyst [http://AmericanDefenseLeague.com/maniacil.htm] -- Whatever, CompuSerb, Boris, ADL . . .

What you need is a psychoanalyst, or spiritual father (if you retain any shred of Orthodoxy). Being saved by Croats from Croats, I think you have adopted the mindset of Ante Pavelic. The ends (if you deem them important) justify the means (if you think they’ll work). This is heresy, and disgraces the memories of those slaughtered by the Ustase (remember the saying, “kill a third, expel a third, and convert a third”) simply for how they crossed themselves. If you had a point to make, you lost it by offending the good people of Rantburg. That is why I believe you are working for the Ustase and Islamofascists -- you are attempting to defile the good name of Serbian Orthodoxy! And not a word from you today about the atrocities being committed by your brothers (the Albanians) in Kosovo, the historic homeland of Serbia. Shame on you traitor! May God have mercy on your soul, if you repent!

#51  Sofia, Boris makes it clear that he'll be filing criminal complaints in the US DOJ against everyone who has violated his Civil Rights

The protection against civil rights violation is a protection of the people against government, not private actors not acting under color of state law (except where slavery is involved). Unless the good folk of Rantburg are turning you into a slave, you're SOL -- the DOJ can't help you; although, they may prosecute you for interstate crime.

#49  OS - Been in Saudi and Thailand for 3+ yrs and working to corp standards - so I've never used Gecko. You may be perfectly right regards today's browsers, but I cut a LOT out of my post, such as faithfully rendering borders and cell BG's and tables and frames and more. Only IE v3.3 and up did them correctly last time I was forced to work the front-end shit - which was late 2000 . early 2001. I kept hearing nightmare stories about Nutscrape up until sometime mid 2003. IE is free, works fine, and compliant - so I don't need a 3rd party browser.

The black BG's you were seeing this AM were an anomaly of your browser and/or operating system. It SHOULD have taken the closest color value from the palette, if it couldn't render the specified HTML value properly - and believe me, I saw the orange and yellow BG's Dan was playing with, not black as you described. So there is a problem on your system. It doesn't matter to me if you use Gecko or Geico, bro! I was just relating my experiences with the causes of such symptoms. :-)

#48  OS - office 32. I hope you understand.

I've sent Boris' information to some "friends" of mine. Boris is toast. It may take a year, maybe even longer, but these guys don't play fair, they play to win. Anonymous, this site is being monitored by some of the folks in Washington, beginning about 10:30AM this morning. I'd be very careful about slinging accusations or making threats. There are about a dozen of us that fall under 10USC101.35. "A word to the wise is sufficient." Let's see if you're a wise man.

#47  Sofia, Boris makes it clear that he'll be filing criminal complaints in the US DOJ against everyone who has violated his Civil Rights, and that includes the Jewish ADL and JDL for Terrorism on US soil. This time they won't be able to forge Jury Instructions as Jewish judge and state prosecutor did in 1992, see link.

#46  Fred & Fellow Rantburgians -

If anyone thinks it would be useful, I have a small dossier of info compiled on Boris the Troll via the net. I emphasize that this is all/all public, open-source information, the vast majority of it left in a trail of slime by Boris himself. It includes numerous web and email addresses together with some IPs. I will be happy to post the entire thing and/or email to known Rantburgians.

Fred/Cingold - as a lawyer, former prosecutor and former cop, I will research the legal end of things to see if there is any possibility. Cingold, I like the way you think ...

#44  Too much spam from Boris.

God Bless you Fred! A lot of people really appreciate your efforts and the service you are providing. I said elsewhere, but will repeat here as well that I agree with someone's prior post that this must be some form of harassment. I was looking at the U.S. Code, and since the guy is soliciting donations for his website (under fraudulent pretenses) it could well be a RICO violation, but this is not my area of specialty. I know it’s time consuming, but I wonder if a call to your local U.S. attorney’s office might be worthwhile:

U.S. Attorney's Office, Main Office
101 West Lombard Street
Baltimore, MD 21201
(410) 209-4800

Since this moron is using the internet to perpetuate his harassment, it would be a federal offense if (as I suspect) the harassment can be characterized as criminal.

#37  I had this happen to one of my sites....it was warez kiddies though.

I went to an automated login process (it emailed the password and most people used throw away email accounts). The first 10 posts of new members were held for review after that they went through. It was only more work in the first week and after that it worked like a charm.

I use PHP and I don't think that the system impacted the anonymity of my users at all....I still have no clue who most of them are.

#35  Ultimately the way to go is to provide client-side certificates for people allowed to post. Posting actions would take place in a SSL-protected web page with permissions only to people with a Rantburg-issued client certificate.

A Rantburg certificate would be cool.

Posted by: Anonymous   2004-3-19 11:58:53 AM

#33  I think I've got a routine that'll cut the moderating feature to only new posters -- once you're accepted the first time you'll be good to go, mostly. It's cookie-based, so you'll have to have cookies turned on and you'll have to comment before making that first post. If you change machines (like when you go home from work) you'll have to repeat the sequence again. But the way most people here comment, you'll probably never notice the diff.

I hope.

#32  Lil Dhimmi / DPA: Tell Fred what browser, version, and OS you're running - otherwise he prolly won't even know where to begin. You're right, DPA - they all do it differently.

Dr Steve, those of us who've had to deal with the multitude of browsers and system OS palettes know which ones work well, which ones are okay, and which ones suck. They run the gamut.

BTW, I have nothing against Macs - except the limited software library available. I had both a PC (DOS) and an original B&W Mac for over a year, myself. When it was time to get a better box, I went for a new PC simply because that's where the software is - and that's what matters in the end.

Whatever gives me the best bang for the buck, that's my primary consideration. I don't wear T-shirts with ANYONE's advertising! Oops, not true - I have one: The 72 Virgins Dating Service, heh.

#25  That's because they're Javascript. Microsoft and the rest of the world have differences in the way they approach the document object. Microsoft allows you to select an subarea within a text area or text box. If I ever have time to go back to Java programming for a visit I might be able to build a data input routine that works the same way (only slower, and not at all if the user has Java turned off or uses a non-Java browser...) I notice that Blogger has the same problem, so I'm not the only one who can't figure it.

Posted by: Steve White   2004-3-19 9:41:20 AM

#23  I didn't see anything on the sidebar regards ADL either.

Regards OS's colors (esp. black background) - that is a function of his browser failing to render the color properly and falling back to default BG of black instead of rendering nearest value from available color palette. I think, from prev OS posts, he's running something other than IE and, possibly, Windows - which might mean a reduced color palette. No browser more faithfully adheres to the WWW HTML standards than IE. Sorry if folks don't like it - it's a fact.

#12  Fred I thought of an idea. What do ya think of this...

If the user doesn't have a cookie they get sent into the delay bin for you to review. If they do have a cookie and it matches a designated "accepted cookie" or key that you maintain on your server it posts immediatly. You keep a mailing list of people that want to allow posting privlages and whenever you change the accepted cookie you email them an URL to set their cookie to post. That way regulars can post immediatly and if someone who you don't want to give access to gets a hold of a valid cookie you can just remove it from your side and send out an email with a link to get the new cookie.
