US Treasury seeks probe into papers taken by O’Neill
2004-01-12
The U.S. Treasury has asked the U.S. inspector general’s office to investigate how a possibly classified document appeared on Sunday in a televised interview of ex-Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill, a department spokesman said on Monday. "It’s based on the (CBS program) ’60 Minutes’ segment, and I’ll be even more clear — the document as shown on ’60 Minutes’ that said ’secret,"’ Treasury spokesman Rob Nichols told reporters at a weekly briefing.
Oops!
In a new book about his term as Treasury chief, O’Neill, who left the job in December 2002 in a shake-up of President George W. Bush’s economic team, criticized White House policies and provided author Ron Suskind with thousands of administration documents. While Nichols said it is customary for departing officials to take documents when they leave, this probe will focus on how possibly classified information appeared on a television interview as one of O’Neill’s papers.
I love it when a plan comes together.

#7  You break classification laws, you get your ass beat down, legally. I don't care who you are or how much stock you own. Simple as A B C.

A) He was issued a clearance.
B) As part of the issuance of the clearance, he was briefed and signed an agreement about handling classified material, including penalties to which he was subject if he broke the rules and laws.
C) He deliberately violated his agreement and the laws, and gave the classified documents to people who shoudl not have had them (His writer, 60 minutes).

Q.E.D. O'Neil is a criminal.

O'Neil belongs in prison the same as I would if I'd have used my classified stuff for personal gain and publicised it in the process.

Bottom line on this is probably good "look ahead" by Bush. Were I him and coming ot office wiht an Iraq that was becoming militant and belligerent, I'd order looks at how we coudl turn the place over. I'd have similar plans drawn up for NKor, places on the Horn of Africa, and Soddy-land.

Its called planning for contingency - and being a responsible president, unlike the last one we had who did everything ad-hoc, with little prep and even less forthought.

#6  Per article on Drudge report "We don't have a secret document. We didn't show a secret document. We merely showed a cover sheet that alluded to such a document," said CBS spokesman Kevin Tedesco. But that doesn't say O'Neill doesn't have the document. I'd like to know why he sat in on NS briefings anyway.

#5  I bet that those papers ‘marked’ S E C R E T are nothing more than his personal rants. If they aren’t Mr. O’neil needs to start subscribing to this month issue of ‘Prison Bride’. Maybe he can room with Johnny Bin Walker and start their own prison call-guy service?

#4  Didn't he say: ""I'm an old guy, and I'm rich. And there's nothing they can do to hurt me."

Well, he will remain OLD.

#3  Bend over and smile, Mr. O'Neill.

Ya shoulda stuck to mouthing off about subjects you have some knowledge of, and kept the secret papers off the tube. Now, you're screwed.

#2  If he's waving classified documents around like a jackass, there's probably a good reason he's the EX-Secretary of the Treasury. He probably won't end up in Leavenworth or Marion, but he's going to be cutting some hefty checks to the DoJ for being a spiteful moron.
