Guantanamo Torture Exposed, Freedom Fighters Suffer Bruised Feelings
2004-01-12
Guards at Guantanamo Bay are racially abusing inmates by calling them "ragheads" and "camel-riders", the family of a British detainee claims.
Allah’s revenge shall be swift and unmerciful
Shafiq Rasul, who has been held at the base since spring 2002, alleged the abuse in a letter to his family. According to his elder brother Habib, he wrote: "Everything’s OK in Guantanamo. It’s just that sometimes some of the guards are OK with us, and some are saying things to us, calling us names like camel-rider and raghead."
Shafiq was willing to sacrifice his blood & soul for OBL, but never signed up for this !
Mr Rasul said: "It’s blatantly racist and Islamophobic. Shafiq’s from Tipton - he’s never seen a camel in his life."
Never seen a camel, only C4, AK-47s & IEDs
Amnesty International said that such abuse, if true, would be "totally unacceptable and alarming".
Isn’t there a Gulag in North Korea somewhere, these folks should be concerning themselves with??
I think from now on we can refer to Amnesia International as Quiche-eating Surrender Monkeys, unless someone can come up with something wittier. They make me tired...
"It’s important that the American authorities do a thorough investigation of these alleged comments."
You bet, we’ll get right on that!
A spokeswoman for the base said she could not verify the comments, but would raise the matter with the camp’s commanders. She added that soldiers received sensitivity training to help them work with Muslim detainees. "If it happened it would be unfortunate and we would need to do some reinforcement. Racial comments are not tolerated," she said.
"Please refrain from calling krazed killers in our custody 'ragheads' or 'camel jockeys.' When discussing their future disposition, try and avoid using the terms 'dead meat' and 'toe-tag.' Under no circumstances are detention facility personnel to shout 'Rosebud!' at detainees while pretending to hang themselves from imaginary ropes. Muttering threats of Dire Revenge™ in pig-Arabic is strongly discouraged, as is the issuance of spurious fatwahs."
A Foreign Office spokesman said it did not comment on specific allegations, but that its officials discussed a range of issues with the US authorities.
"Roger! They're British subjects, y'know. They're not referring to them as 'Limeys' are they?"
"Oh, certainly not, Alistair! Wouldn't think of it!"
"Thank God! Now I feel clean again!"
The allegation of abuse comes amid renewed speculation about the future of the nine Britons at the US naval base in Cuba. A possible breakthrough in the negotiations to have the detainees returned to Britain was signalled recently when a senior American diplomat said the US would release them so long as the UK could "manage" them, possibly via long-term surveillance. The apparent deal prompted lawyers to blame the home secretary for blocking a final resolution. "David Blunkett is fearful that the public mood may change or that he will be criticised if they can’t be prosecuted [in the UK]," said Louise Christian, a lawyer who represents several detainees. The claim of racial abuse is likely to reignite debate about the treatment of the nine. Mail from the base is censored. In an earlier message seen by the Guardian, from another detainee, a lengthy blacked-out section ended: "... but other than that, everything is fine". The father of Rhuhel Ahmed, also from Tipton, said his son had complained of food rations being cut in his last letter. "He said was getting less food than he had when he was first there," Riasoth Ahmed said. "After each meal he would go out for exercise, but he stopped because there was not enough to eat," Mr Ahmed said. The base spokeswoman said that prisoners received three hot meals a day or were able to help themselves to cooked food.
Personally, I'd be feeding them between 5000 and 6000 calories a day. You never see big fat guys waving AKs. The best they can do is rolling their eyes and burping out vows of Dire Revenge™...
The Amnesty International spokesman added that whatever the conditions at the base, long-term confinement without charge or access to lawyers was "absolutely unacceptable".
Reject and be damned, then.
"What the International Red Cross Thingy focused on [in a recent report] was not the conditions per se, but the fact that indefinite detention was what was driving significant numbers of the detainees mad. It’s the utter limbo that’s the final straw," said Gareth Peirce, the solicitor acting for Shafiq Rasul and other prisoners.
Hmmm... I’d say as soon as Al Qaeda signs surrender docs & turns in their weapons, all detainees will be repatriated...
I'll bet the thought of being dead for eternity, or at least until the Last Trumpet, would drive the detainees' victims mad, if they weren't dead, that is...
Only consular officials and the IRC are allowed to visit the 660 detainees. Tony Blair yesterday suggested that the future of the Britons would be decided shortly, telling BBC1’s Breakfast with Frost: "I think it will be resolved one way or another in the next few weeks but I can’t say exactly at this juncture how it will be resolved. It is extremely important that we balance up the absolute proper consideration that they get a fair and decent trial with the need to protect people in this country."
I'd suggest leaving them there until they weigh at least 500 pounds...
The Britons’ lawyers believe that the Bush administration wants to get rid of the men because two of them are plaintiffs in a case to be heard in the US supreme court, which will consider whether American courts should have jurisdiction over the base. "They don’t want a defeat in the supreme court in election year," said Ms Peirce. But US human rights experts have warned that previous indications of releases had not translated into action.

#26  As far as I'm concerned, these shitheads lost their British citizenship a long time ago. We should tell them that and watch the reaction.

#25  Those snipers seem bored. I say put them to work. It'd be pretty funny to see one of these dickheads (sorry, Mahmoud) yanking on it when a 30.06 round takes it off. Oh, the look on his face! It was priceless!

If those jihadis attack a guard, I hope the butt end of a rifle promptly finds the sides of their faces.

#22  Hell OP, just put them down wind of the toothpase felchers.

Or in the same cage as the manic masturbators. It'll be like friday in the tenderloin.

#20  We need to build another couple of hundred cages at Gitmo, and put big banners up on the sides: "Reserved for Amnesty International", "Reserved for the International Red Cross", "Reserved for ACLU Lawyers". Each set of cages gets smaller, with fewer amenities. Put them in nasty spots, like right next to the beach so the sand crabs can get in, or near the jungle, so the spiders, scorpions, centipedes, and other creepy-crawlies can have immediate access.

We are at war with an enemy that not only wants to defeat us, that enemy wishes to TOTALLY destroy our civilization and all it represents. Those aiding and abetting our enemies are our enemies, and we need to begin immediately treating them as such.

#18  wow this really is funny but at the same time infuriating how people actually care about these tossers.I just hope these so called 'British' citizens arn't allowed back over here to wriggle thier slimy way through are twisted legal system.Hell over here you can almost kill someone and get away with a small fine and probation, trust me i've been there,i bet they wouldn't even be put on trial here due to the way are shit (or not so shit for me lol) system works.I'm hoping that if they do get out into the public again in this country which is almost deffinate if they get let out from guantanamo then a few vigilanti types will get them....

#16  Embarass the female Army guards? The best reply is for the woman to laugh and make a gesture indicating it is miniscle.

WHILE public affairs officers these days are going to great lengths to talk about how docile the prisoners are, detainees have been reported biting a guard, spitting, and threatening to kill Americans. When I skirt away from my minders and visit the Marine snipers' tent, I learn it went well beyond that.

The snipers, of course, are the camp's deadliest sharpshooters, ropy young bucks (21-23 years of age) who seem largely culled from the western or southern United States, where firearms are often regarded as extra appendages. Their tent looks like a Marines-issued college dorm room: Skoal-juice bottles, laundry hanging everywhere, and a spade-like sniper insignia banner tacked to a tent wall. If there is a prison uprising, it is these gentleman who will man the guard towers and introduce the rioters to their 72 black-eyed virgins.

At some point, that might become necessary, they tell me, as plotting is obviously afoot. Sgt. Matt Lampert of Montana says the other day one of the prisoners was caught "with a piece of cloth stuffed with rocks that was tied off at the end." Sgt. Rodney Davis says that during chowtime, he sees them through his scope "making terrain models out of their food." And unlike say, Afghan prisons, where starving detainees are reportedly begging to be sent to Gitmo, there's plenty of food to play with. "They get fed better than us, sir," says Lampert. When I ask the Marines if they've seen anything weird, they laugh sheepishly, looking at each other. Finally, Sgt. Josh Westbrook, who sports a forearm tattoo of flaming baby heads, steps up. "They know they're being watched," he explains, "so they'll stare at you, and while they stare at you, they'll, uh, masturbate."

According to these Marines, they don't just pleasure themselves to freak out the snipers, but also to embarrass the female Army guards in the camp's interior. The weirdness doesn't end there. They've also eaten their toiletries and urinated on equipment. "The other day," says Westbrook, "one of the guys tried to do a naked cartwheel." In the most bizarre twist, Lance Corporal Devin Klebaur says a few have also been known to "put toothpaste in their ass." "What's the purpose?" I ask. "I'm not sure," he says, puzzled.

Read the whole thing.

"Excellent!"

#13  Boy, the commutards at amnesty inc. are really grasping at straws if this is the best they can come up with. I guess they were waiting for the detainees to tell wild stories about being put on the rack and thrown in the iron maiden. I guess it's ok to call us infidel pigs and zionist monkeys, but you can't make any comments to the blessed of allah.

#12  You call that abuse? Jeez, I'd be blaring Metallica's "The God That Failed" 24/7. These guys have a lot to learn about abuse.

#11  For generating ethnic slurs, the Arabs are pretty good themselves. Spend four months bobbing around in the Persian Gulf listening to endless chatter on teh bridge to bridge radio. It was all: "Philipino Monkey," then "Arab Donkey" then back to "Philipino Monkey, banana banana." It got to some of the Philipino officers after a while, but for me it took on a rap like beat that passed the time.

#10  Ragheads?

No - thats only the dirty ones. Now that we cleaned 'em up and dressed 'em, they are properly titled "towelheads".

Or "Sheet-heads" to be more precise, but you have to watch how you pronounce that.

Thats Gulf War I terminology for some "3rd party types" we dealt with then - we never disrespected their troops, at least they wore a uniform and did try to fight in spots, and fought as well as they could when they did. The 3rd party types though...

#4  Let's not forget that they've all been TOLD to make charges of abuse.
Posted by: Robert Crawford   2004-1-12 8:04:23 AM

#3  I am disappointed in the lack of professionalism displayed by the GITMO staff. I may be quibbling, but the correct term is "camel jockey" not "camel rider."

#2  Amnesty International said that such abuse, if true, would be "totally unacceptable and alarming".

And 6 million dead in the sudan and systematic torture and rape in Tibet, and many etcs are not?

I used to be a member of AI, but now the organization has been hijacked and corrupted and this trading off its honorable past should be rejected.

Long rant on muslims (and AI)lacking a moral compass avoided.
