Annan Stance on Iraq Threatens U.S. Plan
2003-10-04
United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan's tough stance has thrown into doubt the fate of a new U.S.-sponsored Security Council resolution after he all but ruled out a U.N. political role as long as the U.S. and British forces are running Iraq. Secretary of State Colin Powell responded by calling Annan and assuring him of a significant U.N. role in Iraq. Powell told Annan that the proposed resolution would go a long way toward helping Iraq and smoothing the way for U.N. involvement in the country's future, a U.S. official said. "We are anxious to receive specific suggestions" to improve the proposed resolution, Powell told reporters in Washington on Friday, acknowledging that the pace of the transition was a subject of ongoing debate. Annan has made it clear he opposes the U.S. resolution, which offers the United Nations only a marginal role in Iraq's political process, a senior U.N. official told reporters Friday.

#7  F*ck Annan and the U.N. GWB and Powell need to realize that the U.N. itself is useless, these U.N. resolutions are useless, and forge ahead with a plan that doesn't include U.N. participation.

#6   The only thing the UN can run is away. From 600 staff to 42 with just one bomb blast. Coffee Ann Ann is just like the rest of the UN. They want the US and UK rushed out and the UN rushed in. Therefore when the situation turns into a sh!t sandwich they can blame the US for it.

The biggest shame/sham is the UN itself. Even Helen Keller can see that if the UN "really" cared about the Iraqis that they would go in immediately to help do something to help the people. Instead, like little kids, they won't be happy until the US begs for forgiveness on its knees. They pray every day that some major catastrophe befalls the US and UK. As for France, Russia, China, and the rest. All they're worried about is the money owed and what oil deals they can get. The UN should take strong action NOW! Pack up and close its doors for good. It'd be the first time they ever did anything right. Either that or change the name back to "The League of Nations."

#5  Playing a huge bureaucracy designed to avoid decisions like a fiddle, The Bush Administration asks for "specific suggestions", knowing the ensuing attack of verbal wrangling and "me first" infighting wil last several months...

#4  Funny, I was not aware that the mission of the UN is to have a "role" in a given nation's "political process." Where is that privilege given to the UN?

#3  UN = Ugly Nations
It gets worse by the day, drowning in its immoral platitudes.

#2  Anan can threaten the resolution, but it would be an overstatement to say that he can threaten the plan itself.

#1  It's exhausting just to read about the UN anymore. I hope if Bush wins reelection he really sticks it to these a-holes since he wont have anything to lose.
