Powerful Earthquake Jolts Japan
2003-09-26

EFL and Fair Use
A powerful earthquake jolted Japan’s northernmost island of Hokkaido Friday, forcing thousands to evacuate their homes. Local media reports say more than 300 people were injured. An earthquake measuring 8 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Northeastern Japan at 4:50 a.m. local time Friday. The powerful earthquake occurred in the Pacific Ocean, about 100 kilometers off the coast of Hokkaido. It was the biggest quake recorded in the world this year and the largest to hit Japan in almost nine years. Damage was minor given the quake’s intensity, because the area affected is mostly rural.

#5  Dar - Fair Use is indicated to document that reproducing the article on Rantburg is not meant to infringe upon the copyright. Some blog sites have had suits filed against them for posting of entire articles. If you EFL and reproduce any embedded copyright notice then you have complied with the "fair use" court rulings - or such was your stated intent - almost as important in court. Just trying to protect Rantburg from the zealous types... as it rises in the blog ratings (and Glenn at Instapundit gave a very nice plug yesterday, which will help) it will appear on the radar scopes of those who might think to target it. Windy explanation - sorry!

#4  I understand Old Patriot.... tell me in which Muslim country there would have been no deaths from a Mag 8.0 quake?

#3  The US has an airbase at Misawa, in west-central Hokkaido. Friend of mine there said that there was some "swaying and rocking", but no serious damage. They're still operational. Earthquakes are notorious for being totally unbiased in who they kill/maim/murder/mangle/injure, unlike some religious and political groups.

#1  Luckily it hit Japan and not a Muslim country. Thereby saving tens of thousands of lives.
