Chechen rebels target schoolchildren
2003-09-24
Chechen rebels seem to have adopted a new tactic for intimidating local residents. Schoolchildren are now on their target list. The Federal Security Service has recently prevented a terrorist act against Chechen schoolchildren. Bandits planned to throw an assault grenade at a school in the Chechen capital of Grozny. The attack was scheduled for September 1, the first school day. On Monday, rebels made another attempt. Law enforcement officials found a F-1 assault grenade at School No. 26 of Grozny, and disarmed it.

#8  Weren't the Russians using butterfly bombs and bombs disguised as toys in Afghanistan about 25 years ago? I certainly don't consider that justification for the Chechens to target innocent children by any means, but I don't think the Russians can claim the moral high ground here until that generation is gone.

#7  I would consider the source reliable as the tactic is consistent with Fundemental Nutjob Islamofascist behaviour in other countries in the region, such as Soddy, Iwreck, Bajasyria Lebanon, and Isreal.

And don't forget that dirty bombs, nerve gas, suicide bomber airliners and car bombs are dumb weapons that do not discriminate targets........such as children.

#5  The Chechen rebels are another fundementalist islamic movement. They have ties to Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups of the same ilk.

The main stream media has done a good job of painting this as brutal suppression of rebels when it is really a fight with islamics bend on suppressing the entire country in some kind of sado-machistic taliban fundemental islamic government.

Once you make the connection that these "rebels" are radical fundementalist terrorists, then the targetting of children is not such a surprise. Haven't they targetted children everywhere they raise their ugly little reptilian heads?

#4  Think the left in this country will send human shields to Protect the Children (TM)?

I don't think so either.

#3  The Chechen rebels do not represent the general Chechen populace any more than the so-called "Iraqi resistance" represents the interests of Iraq. At least according to a poll reported here by the Telegraph.

"...More than 1,000 Chechens were surveyed in the independent poll organised by the Moscow-based research organisation Validata, in partnership with Russia's respected Public Opinion Foundation. Interviewers fanned out into the warring republic with questionnaires, working without security guards and talking to people in the privacy of their homes. They found that 78 per cent of respondents thought that Chechnya should stay as one of Russia's 89 regions..."

It's just another case of Islamist bully-boys (and girls) enjoying violence.

#2  I don't think anyone other that the usual suspects (AI, HRW etc) cares what the Russians do to Chechen rebels. There brutality towards Chechen civilians is rightfully condemned by many, but at the same time, most of the rebels they are fighting against are sadists and murderers.

#1  If this is accurate, then the frequent criticism of the Russkies regards "brutality toward the Chechen rebels" is grossly inappropriate. If they are this low, they rival anything and anyone elsewhere for depravity. If true, I hope they continue to use their child-bearing age femalians as suicide bombers. A generation's worth of that idea will place the Chechens in a classic biological box canyon - and deservedly so.
