Saudi militants trained in Al Qaeda camps: Minister
2003-07-30
Six Muslim militants killed on Monday in the latest Saudi security sweep were trained in Al Qaeda camps, Saudi Arabia’s interior minister said in comments published on Tuesday.
Comes as a surprise, doesn't it?
“Most of them received their military training in Al Qaeda camps in Afghanistan and a small number perhaps were trained on farms and the like inside the country,” Prince Nayef was quoted as saying in the London-based Saudi-owned daily Asharq al-Awsat. “Most of the evidence points to them being connected to the terrorists who were arrested in Mecca,” he said, referring to clashes in the Muslim holy city of Mecca last month.

#5  Oh, and that was Prince Walid bin Talal, the guy who wants to buy Lebanon, with the $10 million. Nayef is the guy who denied the 9-11 killers were Soddies...

#2  Nayef - my favorite.

Remember folks, this is the guy who's been running the Interior Ministry for almost 30 years. He was the one who sold out the Saudi Education system to the Wahabbi clerics in exchange for a "cease-fire" on the Royals. He's the one who said "There are no Al Qaeda in Saudi Arabia" (http://www.dawn.com/2002/06/17/top17.htm). This is the Saudi weenie who gave NYC Mayor Giuliani a check for $10M - which the good Mayor rejected (BBC article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/1602840.stm) because Nayaf implied that the US "deserved" the 9/11 tragedy for its support of Israel against the Pals.

NOTE: It may interest you folks to know that a search on Google for this story (Nayef +Giuliani +Palestinians) does not yield a hit for any major US-based News service other than The Chicago Tribune... Does that bother anyone else here? It was MAJOR news when it happened, but it appears CNN, et al, have scrubbed / sanitized the story to remove the Pals. If anyone find hits on other major US news orgs, I'd like to hear of it. This makes me wonder if the Saudis are buying off people... Using www.alltheweb.com I saw a Seattle paper join the list. This really pisses me off.

Fred - I'm getting the "www.rantburg.com" prefix in comments, now - and I'm using double quotes - so I'm showing the URL as text.

#1  Whoah, big admission there: "a small number perhaps were trained on farms and the like inside the country". I read that to mean the "Prince" admitted there are terrorist training camps in Saudi Arabia.

Not that I'm suprised by that fact; I'm surprised that he let it slip.
