A convoy of US troops attacked in southeast Afghanistan suffered no casualties, while four Afghan border guards were wounded in a separate clash. âA Special Operations Forces two-vehicle convoy came under small arms fire while travelling from Khost to Gardez (Friday) morning,â Colonel Rodney Davis told reporters at Bagram Air Base. The troops continued to Gardez, capital of Paktia province which borders Pakistan. It was not known who the attackers were, he said. Four Afghan border guards in neighbouring Khost province were injured Friday morning when they came under attack from around 100 âanti-coalition militantsâ, Col Davis said. Two of the injured were taken to a nearby Italian base and released after treatment for gunshot wounds. The checkpoint 25 kilometres east of Khost city also came under attack two nights ago, he said, citing reports from Afghan border guards. Coalition forces investigating the site of the clash Friday found ammunition casings from AK-47 assault rifles, PK machine guns and rocket propelled grenades. âThe enemy left anti-personnel mines at the checkpoint but they were not fused,â he said. âAll of the mortars and ammunition were serviceable and stockpiled for later use.â
