Polls: Americans now support war even without UN backing.
2003-02-11
From the Washington Post
A majority of Americans support attacking Iraq even without the approval of the United Nations, provided that the United States has the backing of some key allies, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Nearly 6 in 10 Americans said they would endorse military action to topple Iraqi President Saddam Hussein over the objections of the U.N. Security Council if the United States is supported by close allies such as Britain, Australia and Italy. The governments of those countries have been among the strongest supporters of military strikes against Iraq.

In important ways, the latest survey documents how President Bush has managed in a few weeks to refocus national attention on the crisis with Iraq and renew public support for taking military action in the next few weeks.
I've gotta admit, the intensity and speed of the public's attitude change about war with Iraq has surprised me. I think a lot of credit goes to Powell for his performance at the UN.

#5  Whether they agree with him or not, American all respect Colin Powell. Except Harry. So when the French diplomatically stabbed Colin in the back, the rules changed. The road to war just got a little more personal. Just for the record (pun!) Belafonte sounds like a French name to me.

#4  We're going. GWB will let the French the Germans and the UN play their little self important games until everything's in place. Then, no matter what, we go. I'd be far more concerned if we caved into to the Euro-UN bullshit and DIDN'T go.

#3  One more terrorist attack, whether on U.S. soil or not, against Americans will push that support even HIGHER. The little soap opera unfolding with the UN and NATO can't be helping either.

The message to France, Germany, and Iraq: Keep on playing your stupid games. The clock is ticking.

#2  I think that we 'Mericans rather be pissed off than pissed on. The world is changing, it will be very painful, but backstabber govt's like Germany and France will get back what they dished out in spades.

#1  I think that the public's attitude change is due to others factors too: Americans do not particularly like to be slapped in their face by the Axis of Irrelevance, and I would't MISUNDERESTIMATE the key role of the pin-heads of Hollywood. Nobody wants to say or think the same things that richard gere or other Spit-On-Your-Country-When-You-Are-Abroad types do...
