North Korea Resign From Nuclear Treaty
2003-01-10
North Korea has announced its withdrawal from the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, according to the official North Korean news agency monitored in Seoul. But the secretive communist state said it has no intention of developing nuclear weapons, despite the pullout.
"Oh, certainly not!"
The withdrawal — which is to come into immediate effect — comes as two North Korean diplomats begin talks with New Mexico's state governor in what some had hoped was a sign the tension is easing over Pyongyang's nuclear buildup. Bill Richardson — a former U.N. ambassador and energy secretary during the Clinton administration — hosted the two Thursday evening at the governor's mansion in Santa Fe. He is to meet with them again on Friday. Richardson told reporters before the delegation arrived that he had been in touch with the Bush administration and "they're fully supportive of this effort."
"Alright. I guess so. See if they make any sense to you..."
A senior administration official told CNN that Richardson is expected to pass along a message that the United States may be willing to give assurances in writing that it has no intention of attacking North Korea — a condition that would only be given if the Communist nation agrees to give up its pursuit of nuclear weapons.

#1  The longer these negotitations take, the worse off the North Korean government's hold on power gets. NK is trying to create a crisis in the hopes we will buy it off, like the Clinton's did, with oil and aid. But what they are demanding is the aid, while still breaking their promises. I don't think Bush will fall for it, will stall as long as possible and sit back and watch the NK government either fall, or if it takes the stupid option of attacking the south, wipe it out.
