| France stiffened its resistance to US efforts to push through a tough UN Security Council resolution on disarming Iraq, saying it would put forward its own proposal if no accord is reached with Washington. "Non! Non! Since La Belle France is no longer important enough to constitute a potential target for Iraq, there is no reason to destroy this dictatorship!" The announcement by French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin came a day after US President George W. Bush leaned on the UN again, repeating that the United States would take action if the United Nations fails to do so. "We won't accept a resolution which prevents us from doing exactly what I have told the American people is going to happen, and that is if the UN won't act, and if Saddam won't disarm, we will lead a coalition to disarm him," he told reporters after talks with Chinese President Jiang Zemin. That's Texan for: "Shut up, eat your cheese, and stay out of the way!" |
