Minor explosions and shootouts around Kandahar...
2002-08-21
An Afghan patrol sent out to find the enemy made contact, killing one and capturing two men, one of whom was wounded in the shooting. The two men are being held by coalition forces.
Wonder what he has to say?
The violence follows several potentially lethal attacks thwarted by authorities in recent days. "We don't know who is responsible," Police Chief Gen. Mohammed Akram said. "The government has many enemies." Police have said in the past they suspect Taliban members are working together with members of the radical Muslim group Hizb-e-Islami, headed by former prime minister Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, to destabilize the new government.
That'd be my first suspicion, too. Wonder where ol' Gulbuddin might be these days?
On Tuesday, police found two missiles aimed at the municipal stadium where 20,000 to 30,000 people have been attending sports exhibitions and musical performances. Akram said the missiles, each about a yard long, were discovered in an orchard two miles outside the city after a farmer alerted police about a suspicious man in the area. The fuse had been lit when police arrived, he said.
A crowd is just something to shoot rockets at...
On Sunday, a would-be bomber was killed when the homemade explosive he was making detonated just before midnight, police said. A second man was wounded and remains in police custody at a local hospital, police said.
And I wonder what he has to say? Usually the survivor is just an "innocent bystander," somebody that just stopped by to borrow a cup of sugar, when suddenly this rocket this guy had in the living room, y'see, it just goes off for no reason...
The small blast occurred just outside the home of Gov. Gul Agha Sherzai, which was empty at the time. The case is under investigation.
Gul Agha's a desirable target, the weakest of the warlords...
Earlier Sunday, police arrested a man who was hiding 110 pounds of Russian-made TNT and dynamite in a vendor's pushcart in the western part of the city.
"Hot dawgs! Burgers! Ice cream! Dynamite! Get 'em right here!"

#1  After the World Wars and the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, peoples were mainly interested in peaceful national development. Afghanis want beligerant tribal destruction. President Kharzai doesn't even trust his own people enough to employ them as bodyguards. Why subsidize this social idiocy?
