Pressure increasing for bombing halt
2001-11-01
  • Calls for a bombing "pause" began coming from the reliably anti-American corners of the international aid community even before the first reports of civilian deaths had been confirmed. By this week Ruud Lubbers, the Dutch head of the U.N. refugee agency, was saying that even a pause would not be enough, that still more comprehensive U.S. "self-restraint" was necessary. Worried about public opinion in Europe and the Muslim world, British officials have been hinting that the bombing should be slowed or even stopped for a while during winter or during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, while emphasis is given to lower-profile operations.
