Putin Should Be Very Worried About Ukraine's New Kamikaze Drone
[Daily Beast] The war in Ukraine is no stranger to drones, but the kamikaze drone strike on the Russian city of Rostov last week marked the beginning of a whole chapter in drone warfare. A small ramshackle Ukrainian drone with a tiny warhead flew across the heavily defended front line and smashed into an oil refinery in Russia on June 22, causing a large fire. Given how cheap it is to make a drone, and its successful evasion of Russian air defenses, Russian officials might soon have to worry about defending oil facilities, supply depots, and military installations deep in Russian territory.

Long-range kamikaze drones are a new threat to Russia. Most observers of the conflict in Ukraine are familiar with the Switchblade drones provided by the U.S., but these have a relatively short range and require operators to direct it onto a target. Kamikaze drones like the one used in the Rostov attack can go hundreds of miles without the need for an operator, and are small enough to slip by much of Russia’s air defense, which is designed to detect and engage fighter jets and missiles. With the use of GPS and inertial guidance systems, a Ukrainian operator would simply need to give the drone a point on the map before sending it on its way.

For Russia, the biggest concern is that Ukraine can make these cheaply and easily. Press reports claim the drone used in the Rostov attack was produced by Ukraine or a was model available on the internet for less than $10,000. Airframes, engines, and guidance systems could all be bought commercially and assembled without too much technical expertise. The payloads are likely small and the drone can’t re-adjust if the coordinates are wrong, but it costs a fraction of its American and Turkish-made counterparts and can do millions of dollars in damage if it hits a fuel tank or sets fire to a docked naval vessel. Depending on the final unit cost, Ukrainian drones could conceivably be cheaper than the missiles Russia would use to shoot them down.

War in Ukraine. Summary 06/30/2022
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[ColonelCassad] 1. Lisichansk.
Fighting in Lisichansk itself, in Privolye, Verkhnekamenka, on the outskirts of Volcheyarovka and beyond Belaya Gora. The battles for Zolotarevka, Disputed and Verkhnekamensk began.

The enemy is trying to hold the corridor through Belogorovka to Seversk in order to be able to move away from Lisichansk. The grouping continues to remain in the operational environment, but there is no full-fledged boiler yet - one more road remains to be cut.

2. Soledar.
Fights near Nikolayevka, in Berestovoye and Belogorovka. The enemy began to fortify the chain of settlements between Soledar and Seversk, where he expects to delay the advance of our troops after the fall of Lisichansk.

3. Artemovsk.
Our troops are slowly advancing in Klinovoe. The enemy's defense in Pokrovsky is holding. The enemy began to prepare for the defense of the outskirts of Artemovsk, expecting the imminent start of battles for the city.

Our troops are stepping up pressure on Kodema and Semigorye in order to cut off the group defending the Uglegorsk TPP and Novolugansk.

In Ukraine, they say that they will transfer reinforcements to the Donbass to keep the situation in this direction.

4. Slavyansk.
It is reported about the capture of Sidorovo and Bogorodichny. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine denies the loss of Bogorodichny and states that he still controls part of the village. According to Sidorov, the situation is still unclear. If the village is taken, then this means the imminent start of battles for Mayaki north of the outskirts of Slavyansk.

On the Izyum direction without significant changes - there is no advance in the area of Dolina and Krasnopolye.

5. Kharkov.
Against the backdrop of ongoing systematic attacks in the area of Kharkov and Chuguev, after the occupation of Dementyevka, the RF Armed Forces are stepping up pressure near Verkhny Saltov, Tsupovka and the village of Udy.
The processing of the Zolochevsky fortified area continues. It is also worth noting the Tu-141 Strizh UAV flying in the direction of Kursk, which was probably trying to identify the capabilities of Russian air defense systems before possible strikes in the Kursk region using OTRK and American MLRS.

6. Avdievka.
No major changes. Fighting, as before, is taking place near the Avdievka-Konstantinovka highway. There is no serious progress in the direction of Ochertino and Krasnogorovka. New York has no significant changes so far.

7. Zaporozhye.
On the line Kamenskoye-Orekhov-Gulyaipole-Velikaya Novoselovka without significant changes. Positional fights. It is worth noting that the head of the DPR, Pushilin, after the exchange of prisoners of war in the Zaporozhye region in the Kamensky region, announced the continuation of negotiations on a further exchange of prisoners of war, which will probably also be held in the Zaporozhye region.

8. Nikolaev.
Positional battles in the Nikolaev, Krivoy Rog and Nikopol directions. The enemy claims that he was able to repel the attacks of the RF Armed Forces in the Potemkino area and keep the village behind him.

The RF Armed Forces continue to strike at headquarters and concentrations of troops in the Nikolaev region.

9. Odessa.
The Russian Armed Forces left Zmeiny Island due to increased artillery and rocket attacks.

Ukraine stated that it would establish control over the island, but later stated that conditions for this still needed to be created, fearing that when landing on the island, Ukrainian forces would already become a target for missile strikes.

Politically, the departure from Zmiinoye is linked to the unblocking of grain exports from Ukrainian ports as part of the negotiations that have been going on in Turkey since May. Linking the Serpentine issue with the issue of cargo transit to Kaliningrad has not yet been officially confirmed.

10. Ugledar, Marinka, Izyum - no significant changes.

October 1919. Baltic States and Petrograd
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
by Oleg Airapetov

[REGNUM] On October 16, the Defense Council decided "... to hold Petrograd at all costs until the arrival of reinforcements that have already been sent ... Therefore, to defend Petrograd to the last drop of blood, not yielding a single inch and fighting on the streets of the city." On the same day, Trotsky decided:

Satellite images of Zmeiny Island 06/29/2022
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[ColonelCassad] Satellite images of Zmeiny Island from June 29 after the withdrawal of the Russian garrison. There are traces of strikes from last week, where one Pantsir air defense missile system was declared destroyed. Some property is smoking on the pier, which was destroyed before leaving. Also, some dilapidated house is smoking from among those that did not break during the May battles.

In Ukraine, they say they want to establish physical control over the island, but everything seems to be limited to demonstrative events with the landing of small troops by boats or helicopters, the raising of the flag and photographs. Obviously, if you try to linger on the island, missile attacks on the island will follow, if Ukraine does not have the ability to cover the island from the air.

It is also worth noting that the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announces the transfer of artillery systems and MLRS, with the help of which they fired on Zmeiny in the Donbass, in order to deter the advance of Russian troops on Artemovsk and Slavyansk.

From Russian military blogger Andrey Chervonets:

The price of a "goodwill gesture"

After the surrender of With a high degree of probability, it can be expected that the Ukrainian Armed Forces will begin, if they have not already begun, the operational transfer of formations and military units to the east. That is, everything that shot and flew in the area of about. Zmeiny Island will soon be on the land front.

And this is at least:

- 2 divisions of the Smerch MLRS,
- 2-3 Himars batteries
- up to the M777 division
- up to the Bayraktarov squadron
- the Buk air defense division
- as well as engineering and other support units.

In addition, now up to two mechanized brigades (one of them - marines) can be transferred from the ODESSA region to the east, up to the TerO brigade (4-5 rifle battalions and one mechanized battalion), and others (including artillery ) parts.

The flight resource of manned aviation, which was involved by the Armed Forces of Ukraine in operations in the area of about. Zmeiny Island, will now also be used east. Most likely - in the Nikolaevsky direction.

And you continue to make "gestures of good will." After the first two such "gestures" many flinched. I'm afraid to imagine a third.

More from Chervonets:
Criminal "goodwill gestures"

What kind of anecdote is this? The wording is especially impressive; Do they write them on purpose to annoy people?

"Russia, as a gesture of goodwill, withdrew its troops from Zmeiny Island, thereby demonstrating to the world community that the Russian Federation does not interfere with the efforts of the UN to organize a humanitarian corridor for the export of agricultural products from the territory of Ukraine"

"The Russians staunchly defended Gostomel and retreated. They fought heroically on Zmeiny Island and left on command. Why? failures in our time hit the army and the state more than the failures of the military itself.

(c) Alexander Zhuchkovsky

"I tried to imagine that all this was voiced by the voice of Yuri Levitan. Well, that's how we remember from childhood from films and programs

" From the Soviet Information Bureau ... Today, as a step of goodwill, the military completed the tasks and as a gesture of good Will left the city of Odessa. Now the Romanian sources of oil for the German army can be safe.

Did not work out. It didn’t introduce itself. "

(c) from Andrey Medvedev's TG

Yes, Levitan announced the abandonment of cities and the blockade. But not as a matter of good will.

Control over Zmeiny Island held back supplies through Moldova and gave some kind of control over the port of Odessa. Now, to stop supplies, the only option is one is to drown everything that will float there, but naturally no one will do this.

More important is not even the fact that the island was left. The crisis and global, the whole scale of the disaster is in a completely different place. Even in an uncut form (with clarifications about grain), the wording of the Ministry of Defense testifies to a deep crisis and even the absence of adequate information and explanatory work. At the same time, Konashenkov is engaged in an appeal to the world community, only for what, when this world community is engaged in arming the Ukrainian army?
Konashenkov is a reference to Russian Ministry of Defense Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov.
The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation justifies this by preserving equipment and personnel. At the same time, burn the equipment that was previously heroically transported to the island?

This is genius. And this is after all the ups and downs associated with this island. Normal plan. In the same way, troops were withdrawn from three regions of Ukraine. The next step is the opening of shipping, so that dear Western partners can export grain and supply weapons in an order of magnitude larger volumes of saloreihu.

According to this logic, it is possible to withdraw troops from Ukraine in order to prevent the loss of personnel and equipment. That's it, bring me the epaulettes of the marshals and transfer the salary. If so, then this is a black irony.

Let me remind you: the phrase "step of good will" explodes public consciousness for the second time. The first time was when in Istanbul, against the backdrop of a fallen microphone, they announced our departure from Kyiv with surprising awkwardness. The second time - today about Zmeiny Island. Who is this brilliant writer? And it’s scary to think what will be the third such step?

Zaporozhye and Kherson? Maybe we will leave them as a "gesture of good will"? (black irony, if anything, but in reality I don’t rule out such a decision). And although the people in these former regions of Ukraine are definitely not hostile, but so far the presence of the RF Armed Forces is perceived with caution. It is understandable - according to the "gesture of good will" the Bandera people can return there again.

The people are ready to endure inconvenience, some deprivation. But he is not ready to endure deceit, lies, silence (and in the 21st century you will not be silent), he is afraid of betrayal, as was the case in the 90s, and hates such "goodwill gestures."

And once again I will touch on an important topic, the topic of information confrontation. Here, with a very small number of actual victories, the team of "Quarter-95" competently does the heating pad of the Russian military information field like an ace.

The head of propaganda in the Ministry of Defense and adviser to Shoigu, a certain Ilnitsky, by the way, a native of Lviv, declares that we need to "not fall into the information war, where they have more resources", that is, in fact, offers not to appear on it. In my humble opinion, Ilnitsky simply retouches his incompetence, his failure in his position, justifies his inaction. Inaction, again in my humble opinion, is criminal in a military situation.

And all sorts of statements by various karnaukhs on the topic: "Who are you to report to you," and "Criticize, but in silence," I personally also consider criminal. You have to be educable.

P.S.
The main reason was the lack of reconnaissance and target designation equipment of the operational-tactical link in the arsenal of the fleet and the Aerospace Forces, which would allow effective targeting of aircraft and "Caliber". Like, for example, the UAV MQ-9 Reaper.

Yet, again, more from Chervonets:
Can't play giveaway

"Gestures of good will" are ALWAYS perceived by the enemy as weakness. It's an axiom.

I don't really understand why we need to show some gestures of good will to the world community when the world community shows us only goat faces. DO NOT play giveaway.

Important was written by the military commander Alexander Kots on this topic:

I don’t understand why the image of a knight on a white horse is molded from the Russian army. Who will appreciate this image? Those who are for the RF Armed Forces will not turn away from them in any case. Those who are against cannot be persuaded.

Here, a letter came from the mother of a dead Russian soldier. Read to the end.

“My son died on March 28 in Malaya Rogan. There was no longer any hope, but on June 4 we were informed that there was an exchange and he was among them.

On June 10, we buried our son - a hero. He did not run away, did not leave the wounded, he was not even wounded, but he was not given a chance to live. He and two of his subordinates were shot on the spot. This was already told to us by his commander, who was taken prisoner and then exchanged.

For our family, as well as for many such grief-stricken families, the main thing now is that the death of our sons is not in vain.

Blame Russia, Russia and Russia again
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

Commentary by Russian military journalist Boris Rozhin

[ColonelCassad] About Biden's statements following the NATO summit.

1. Only Russia is to blame for all the economic troubles of the United States.

The Biden administration continues to stand its ground despite growing criticism of such a position within the United States and falling ratings ahead of the midterm elections. They cannot deviate from this line, as this will mean admitting that the administration in the economic field has completely failed, so they will hammer on the topic "Putin is to blame for inflation and rising prices for food, gasoline and gas", just like they hammered the topic earlier "Putin hacked the US election, and Trump is a Kremlin agent." At the same time, no improvements are expected - US residents, according to Biden, "should pay the price as much as necessary."

Let's look at the fruits of this information line in autumn.

2. The US and its satellites will continue to supply weapons to Ukraine.
This is, frankly, not news. Old supplies are gradually being ground down, so new supplies are needed. Their range will obviously expand - they will strive to focus on artillery, MLRS and air defense systems of short and medium range.

All this is an unnecessary reminder that in Ukraine we are at war with the US and NATO, if someone thought it was a "war with Ukraine." Ukraine is just an instrument of American policy here. They expect to use the same tool in the upcoming war for Taiwan, where the puppet government is defiantly heading for a military clash with the PRC.

3. Deliveries of F-16s to Turkey.

Here, the Biden administration actually made a serious concession to Erdogan in order to put pressure on Russia, removing one of the key demands on Erdogan - to abandon the use of the S-400 under the threat of cutting off arms supplies from the United States. This is again a demonstration of the weakening of US influence, when a formal overlord is forced to make concessions to his vassals in order to achieve what he wants. The times of directive control of the world are long gone.

PS. Regarding Erdogan, he skimmed a lot of cream off this issue.

Erdogan announced the price of his consent to the admission of Sweden and Finland to NATO. In addition to the written commitments of Sweden and Finland, which are recorded in a joint declaration and related to the cessation of support from Sweden and Finland to the Gülen organization and Kurdish organizations, Sweden and Finland must extradite more than 70 Kurds associated with the PKK to Turkey.

In addition, Biden said today that the United States should supply Turkey with F-16s, as Turkey demanded (the United States had previously refused these deliveries under the pretext that until Turkey abandoned the S-400, it would not receive aircraft from the United States). For complete happiness, the extradition of Gülen and the withdrawal of American troops from Rojava are still not enough.

Also, Sweden and Finland are warned that if they do not fulfill their obligations, the Turkish parliament will not support the approval of the admission of these countries to NATO.

In general, "Drug Rejep" was able to twist the hands of the US and NATO and is now trying to fix its winnings. No joke - from the point of view of Turkey, an excellent combination. But the Turks, of course, suspect that they can be thrown.

To better understand the dilemma of the Europeans. In order to get Turkey's consent, they need to extradite 73 people to Turkey who were under political protection on the territory of a European country and were not considered terrorists. On the contrary, Turkey's claims to extradite them were rejected in every possible way.

Now, for the sake of political necessity, they need to extradite these people (in Turkey, at best, a prison and long sentences await them on charges of terrorism). Erdogan offers such a choice to those who like to chat about that. that they "will never exchange democratic principles for political necessity." For Sweden and Finland, this is a complete Faustian deal.

The price of joining NATO is the extradition of 73 people for reprisal.

We'll watch with interest how the European Democrats will try to seep "between the raindrops" on this issue.

Why it was necessary to change our fighters for captured Azov fighters
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
By Dmitry Steshin

[KP] Our fighters, who were traded for "Azov", told about what they experienced in captivity.

The exchange of prisoners, among whom were 43 Nazis from Azovstal, caused misunderstanding in the information space. The community of infallible "couch experts" even accused the organizers of this exchange of all sins.

People who have been fighting in the Donbas for the eighth year, oddly enough, had a completely opposite opinion: "ours must be pulled out at any cost."

In the Donbass, they are well aware that in Ukrainian captivity, our fighters are tortured. Eight years ago, during the first exchange, in the fall of 2014, the released militias were immediately loaded into the ambulances. Many could not walk, some of the militias had their arms and legs broken not during the fighting, but in captivity…

Nothing has changed over the years. All the prisoner exchanges that took place looked the same: our guys, beaten, mentally broken, with festering wounds and somehow bandaged with dirty bandages, barely walked to their own through the neutral zone.

Cheerful “zahistniks” (defenders in Ukrainian - Ed.) walked towards them and dragged trunks with things behind them ... But, the descendants of Bandera never limited themselves to physical violence. Cases are well known in the Donbass when our fighters, exchanged from captivity, committed suicide a few months later, unable to withstand the mental breakdown ...

This exchange is no exception. In the video, the fighters tell how they were beaten in Ukrainian captivity, tortured with electric current, dragged through prisons - from Poltava to Nikolaev and Kyiv. According to the serviceman Sergei Tolstoy, who was taken prisoner in early spring, he was tortured with the help of a field telephone, connecting wires to his fingers:

"- On average, this torture lasted four hours. Beat and just like that. And they shot me in the leg. The bullet went through one thigh and entered the second, and did not come out, it sits there ... They sawed off my fingers, well, they grew together ..."

You listen to such stories and ask yourself a tricky question - was it necessary to pull Sergei Tolstoy out of captivity or, after all, leave him there, for the sake of some principles? For a young guy to still be tortured to death? We somehow quickly forgot the main reason for the special operation: “We don’t leave our own!”. It's good that people who make decisions have a strong memory ...

Again: I am not a Russian agent, and I yet have to receive payment from Russia, not in cash or any other medium of exchange.

Old, broke, and fat is no way to go through life as a Russian agent.

And in case you're unaware, mere mention of ISIS is banned in the territory of the Russian Federation.

#3  This has been discussed in varying tones of alarm since the 1980s. Some thoughts:

How is savings defined? Does it include home equity — around 65% of Americans own instead of rent

There is a worker shortage. How many retirement age Americans will choose to continue or return to work when they realize they need the income or find themselves bored, perhaps working part time instead of full time or in job less physically/mentally demanding than before?

Means testing, etc: again, discussed since at least the 1980s. I’ve long assumed there would be nothing for people like me, to ensure there will be more for those who really need it.

#4  Granted, it's a "contract" imposed by gummint without consent from the other side. Still, go on, bust it and watch the fun.

Look for a "how to submit your tax return when SS is broken" movement.

#5  ...I'll be able to take SS in Feb '27, but I still haven't decided yet if I'll try to keep working till 70, or just take a few months off and then get something just a few hours a week.

My concern right now is that IIRC, by law SS (and active duty/retired military pay) are keyed to inflation because, hey, we were never going to have inflation again. If you see Congress try and weasel their way out of that, then you'll know for sure they have no intention of fixing SS until it's probably way too late.

#6  Takes a long time to recover the age 62 premiums if you wait until FRA. I wasn't going to start breaking even until somewhere in my early 80's. I took the smaller annuity at 62 and ran. You have to do the math for your particular situation. Also be advised, it's taxable income...thanks to Bill Clinton. Good luck with your decisiin.

#7  ^ I did the same. So many die near retirement or don't live long afterward. A friend who was a retired vet counseled other Vets. Told me waiting a few years would not make much of a difference. I work and have done well. I had to work as my work at home never stopped. It was a break for sure.

Udaipur Horror: Punishing the killers is easy, not quite the enablers
[OneIndia] Kanhaiya Lal had been pleading with the authorities and also repeatedly flagged the threat to his life for over 15 days before he was killed in the most horrific manner

The two monsters in human form who brutally beheaded an innocent Hindu citizen, Kanhaiya Lal, in Udaipur are under arrest and will face the law now. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is also on the job trying to investigate whether this was part of a larger conspiracy. That one of the killers had spent a month and a half in Pakistain recently has been stated by the Rajasthan home minister himself. There are also reports of the killers being motivated by a Barelvi bad boy group Dawat-e-Islami. No doubt these facts will come out as the investigation progresses.

Far more disturbing are the countless media reports showing, in a chronological manner, the unpardonable lapses of the local police. It is now public knowledge that Kanhaiya Lal's murder was no surprise. He had been pleading with the authorities and repeatedly flagging the threat to his life for well over a fortnight. Hence, the police needs to share the blame too and no amount of cover fire by spokespersons of the Congress can change this fact.
